Selena Gomez can’t stop gushing about the track she recorded with Blackpink and her honorary status.
Everyone knows that Selena Gomez is a standalone act. And yet, she’s had plenty of successful collaborations with other big-name artists
As Billboard recapped, the music video for “Ice Cream” was filmed in two locations, then spliced together. So, Selena Gomez and the members of Blackpink didn’t technically perform the song together.
Selena recorded her bit in Los Angeles, while Blackpink filmed theirs in South Korea. And though the video may not have featured Selena’s favorite music video makeup look, she seemed totally in her element on film.
Still, Selena has met some of the band members in person, which explains why she feels the performers are kindred spirits. In 2019, she attended New York Fashion Week and was introduced to Jisoo and Rosé.
The Blackpink ladies also explained that they’ve been huge fans of Selena since their trainee days. In fact, they learned some of Selena’s songs during their training to become K-Pop stars.
The success of the new song was staggering, surpassing Blackpink’s song with Lady Gaga (“Sour Candy”) and their standalone hit “How You Like That” on the charts.
While its commercial popularity is indisputable, it’s also noteworthy that Selena had an amazing time working on the track. In one podcast, she commented, “It’s definitely a joyful thing. Being a part of it brought me joy.”
While plenty of her own music is deep, sensual, and emotional, Blackpink’s priority seems to be entertaining their audience. And as CheatSheet reiterated, Selena said of the music video: “It’s literally a dream… It’s a whole other world and it’s so special. It’s really exciting.”
She also explained that Blackpink’s song was vastly different from her own work. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. Maybe Selena’s ready to move in a new direction with her creative pursuits…
And of the gals from Blackpink themselves, Selena gushed, “They are just the coolest. They’re just cool. They’re so sweet, and the song is so fun.”
In a video call where she interviewed alongside Blackpink, Selena elaborated on why she said yes to the opportunity. She’s a huge fan of the girl group, and the song was the exact type of upbeat song she wanted to share with the world.
But beyond that, Selena explained, “I actually officially made myself a member of this band,” because she felt so close to Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and the super-fashionable Rosé. They “got into that world together,” Variety quoted Selena as saying.
Further, their collab was so natural, given that the ladies are “at the same label but under different umbrellas,” Selena confirmed. Hopefully, fans can expect more collabs between Selpink… we mean, Selena Gomez and Blackpink… in the future.
