With the recent rebirth of the Lamborghini Countach, HotCars artist Rostislav Prokop sees what the 90s Italian sports car might look like today.
The Lamborghini Diablo is not only one of the most iconic Lamborghini models ever released, but perhaps one of the most iconic sports cars of the 90s. The Diablo first hit the market in 1990 with a staggering top speed of 202 MPH and acceleration of 0 to 60 MPH in just 4.5 seconds. This was thanks to the massive 5.7-liter V12 engine that produced 492 HP. It was a true engineering marvel, and it quickly asserted itself in the supercar hall of fame.
HotCars digital artist Rostislav Prokop has created a modern reimagining of the legendary Lamborghini Diablo and gives us a glimpse of what its return could look like in 2023.
The Lamborghini Diablo Gets A Modern Design
Lamborghini began designing the Diablo in 1985 as a replacement for their flagship sports car the Countach and the Miura before it. Like its two predecessors, it was designer Marcello Gandini that created the first render of the Diablo.
It was futuristic, wide, low, and sported his infamous sharp lines and edges. The brand was, however, bought by Chrysler in 1987, and they refined the final design of the Diablo, smoothing out any sharp edges and improving the aerodynamics.
Its modern counterpart designed by Rostislav Prokop retains this iconic shape while giving it a 21st-century update. The clean lines and smooth shape in this new design echo the original and even take it a step further in the rear with a scaled-back spoiler and Lamborghini’s signature air scoops.
It is clear from the shape and detailing of this modern iteration that it is putting more focus on aero performance. Around the back, a massive rear diffuser gives an aggressive new look while also improving aerodynamics. Prokop then finishes off the side with an update to the iconic Lamborghini Diablo 6.0 wheels and a set of carbon ceramic brakes.
While many manufacturers are looking to turn their sports cars into pure EVs, this render’s dual exhaust pipes show that a powerful gasoline engine resides underneath its modern skin.
The Engine That Powers This Modern Lamborghini Diablo
One only has to look at the latest Lamborghini offering to understand what powertrain the modern Diablo might have. The last remaining relative of the Diablo, the Aventador, will retire this year after eleven years of success. Lamborghini will announce its new replacement in March 2023, and as yet most of the details are speculative.
HotCars recently caught Lamborghini testing this new model in Italy, under the protection of a white cover to obscure many of the details. What is obvious, however, is that the carmaker is refusing to let go of its iconic V12 engine any time soon. So, it is fair to assume that the modern Diablo would also get this same V12 powerplant with an alleged 1,000 HP, albeit with a hybrid powertrain.
It’s not too hard to imagine a remake of the iconic Lamborghini Diablo, especially as that’s exactly what happened with its predecessor, the Countach. The remake in question, the 2022 Lamborghini Countach, was an extremely limited model and did not see mass production like the Huracan, Aventador, or Urus.
Even after 30 years, the demand for the Lamborghini Diablo continues to increase. Values also continue to go up with examples on the used market selling for $250,000-$600,000 according to classic.com. If Lamborghini did decide to revive the Diablo, there is certainly a market for it.
