Manchester City supporters are worried about what left-back options remain upon his departure
Manchester City fans are concerned about the defensive depth of the squad after it was revealed that Joao Cancelo would be leaving for Bayern Munich on loan for the rest of the season.
The deal includes an option-to-buy clause worth €70m (£61.6m) with the Blues confident they have enough cover at full-back. Therefore, they are thought not to be pursuing a replacement in the final 36 hours of the window.
Cancelo hasn’t enjoyed the form of previous seasons and has endured a rough patch since the World Cup break. As a result, he was benched for five games by Pep Guardiola, including against Liverpool in the League Cup, Tottenham in the Premier League and Arsenal in the FA Cup.
The player wants regular game time again and doesn’t see that this will be possible at City for the rest of the season, despite playing the most minutes out of any City defender this term. Nathan Ake has done well when filling in at left-back in Cancelo’s absence.
Despite his blue patch, City fans are still shocked to see Cancelo leave and took to Twitter to share their angst. They are fearful about their options at left-back without Cancelo with Ake not being a natural full-back and summer recruit Sergio Gomez failing to overwhelm so far.
