The Austrian has emerged as a Deadline Day target for United and Chelsea but time is running out to sign the 28-year-old.
With Jorginho set to join Arsenal and a move for Enzo Fernandez looking unlikely, Chelsea have made a late dash to sign the former RB Leipzig star.
United, though, have entered the race in the final hours of the window after learning that Christian Eriksen will be out for at least 12 weeks.
Sabitzer has started just seven Bundesliga matches this term and he’s keen to move on in the search for regular first team football.

And Fabrizio Romano claims the Austrian has made it clear that he’d be keen on joining United and has given the green light to moving to Old Trafford.
The Austrian did not train in Bavaria today, given the uncertainty over his future at the club.
The news is a blow for Graham Potter but a move for Fernandez is not dead in the water.
The Argentine has asked Benfica to accept Chelsea’s £105m bid and he’s hoping the pressure he’s put on the Portuguese giants will pay off.
Sabitzer: Playing at Old Trafford was ‘special’
The midfielder has previously expressed his admiration for United, describing them as a “big team” ahead of a Champions League match against the Red Devils during his time at RB Leipzig.
Speaking to the media before the group stage match at Old Trafford, which ended in a 5-0 win for United, Sabitzer was asked if he was nervous about playing at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
He replied: “No. Because I won’t be starting anyway, so I’m pretty relaxed. If I knew I was playing, it would be different.
“I’m just happy to be here because I used to see this stadium on TV as a kid and I always wanted to come here.
“So being here as an opposition player is something very special.”
It remains to be seen whether United will be able to complete a deal for Sabitzer before the transfer window closes for Premier League clubs at 11pm (GMT) on Tuesday night.
