A humpback whale breaches through the calm sea not far from an unprepared fisherman, as seen in the incredible video and gallery of images.
Whale watcher Kate Cummings and photographer Douglas Croft captured this image of a whale flying over the waves ᴄʟᴏsᴇ to a boat carrying an unlucky fisherman before it crashed back down. The sequence was captured on camera near Monterey Bay in Cᴀɴᴀᴅᴀ.
Douglas proclaimed it to be quite exciting. Salmon season coincided with the humpback whales’ return to Monterey Bay for summer feeding, and the bay was filled with fishing boats. This whale had already breached a few times, and regularly it continued to do so.
Douglas claimed that in order to access a porthole near the ocean, he went below deck. That is what led to the breathtaking vantage point from which to see the whale. It really demonstrated the breach’s size that it happened directly behind the fishing boat. Even though the boat was ᴄʟᴏsᴇr and should appear bigger, the whale was immense.
More than once, the whale breached farther away from the fisherman. But when whales breach frequently, they would also swim in a specific direction underwater to build momentum for the next breach. Once he realized the whale was moving in that direction, he could predict when the next breach would occur and take images.
