Have you ever witnessed a buffalo fling a lion into the air, watch it perform three flips before landing on its feet? You have it now.
Sune Eloff, Business System Manager, witnessed an almost amusing interaction between a buffalo and a young lion who was attempting to catch a monitor lizard while driving on the H4-1 west of Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park. Soon, intriguing developments began to take place.
Sune said that At Sunset Dam, they spent some time watching impala come down for a drink. After deciding to continue, they came upon some lions dozing off in the riverbed. They were all so serene and tranquil, but then all of them quickly stood up and moved into the reeds. Unexpectedly, a young lion emerged from the reeds carrying a recently caught water monitor lizard. The entire sᴄᴇɴᴇ began to take shape at this point.
One of the nearby buffalos came charging in as though he knew the lizard needed to be protected after noticing that the lion had taken one. The buffalo then proceeded to get his head right under the perplexed lion and somersault him through the air, much to their total amazement. It was absurd!
Sune said that she was conflicted because of how exciting everything was happening. She felt awful for the young lion, but fortunately he was intelligent enough to realize that he needed to leave immediately, so he took off running.
