Sahara Wulfsohn, a field guide at the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ, captured this amazing footage while on a safari.
In order for her guests to see Africa’s most elusive large animal, the leopard, Wulfsohn eagerly pointed her car in the direction where a colleague ranger had reported seeing one ᴄʟᴏsᴇ to Kirkman’s Kamp. She arrived to find a leopard silently skulking through a tamboti bush.
She claimed that initially she was unaware of the presence of a small honey badger and the fact that the leopard was only a few meters away from them. She couldn’t believe what she was witnessing when she knew what was going to happen.
The cat moved with the type of meticulous care that only leopards are capable of, creeping up on the badger until it was almost touching it. The juvenile badger made an effort to ғɪɢʜᴛ against the much larger predator, which had its victim pinned to the ground and was prepared to ᴋɪʟʟ it, but it was no match for him. Mom, on the other hand, sprang to action before it had a chance. Her characteristic badger confidence caused the big cat to flee for shelter as she angrily threw herself at it.
The mother’s courageous rescue attempt was successful, as she was spotted taking her teenage kit into a nearby burrow. The infant badger’s front right leg is probably broken, but according to Wulfsohn, it will very certainly survive thanks to its mother’s strength and care.
