Jayson Tatum is proving that he deserves to be looked at as one of the best players in the NBA, making a strong case for MVP this season by leading the Celtics to the best record in the league. Tatum is balling out this season and will hope to add a championship to his collection this year.
Tatum’s excellence has caught the eyes of superstars of the past and present. LeBron James always recognized the former Duke Blue Devil as a threat, even when he was a rookie. Michael Jordan has also fostered a relationship with Tatum, as JT is a Jordan Brand athlete.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Celtics handily beat the Charlotte Hornets with Tatum having a 51-point night. Even if MJ likes the Celtics’ star, that loss was a tough one to stomach for him. Tatum described their relationship in an interview and said MJ usually texts him after big games but didn’t say anything to him after that one.
You’re a Jordan Brand member; your signature Jordan shoe should be on the way, but you dropped 51 points against MJ’s Hornets on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Did he give you any grief for what you did to his team?
“He’ll text me every once in a while when I have a big game, but he didn’t text me after that one (51 against the Hornets).”
Do you think that was pretty intentional?
Maybe so. I know he watches all the Hornets games, so he saw. Even when does reach out and text me after a good game, that’s still pretty surreal. Even when I see his name come across my phone, it still doesn’t seem real. (h/t Complex)
Jayson Tatum is averaging 31.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.4 assists this season. He is the leader of the league-best Celtics and is zeroing in on his first career MVP triumph.
Will Jayson Tatum Ascend Into Championship-Winning Greatness?
Jayson Tatum is one of the most skilled two-way forwards in the game today. He has improved his level of play consistently over his career but has never been elite enough to overpower opponents in the playoffs. He made it to the NBA Finals for the first time last season and looked helpless against the Golden State Warriors, especially in the final 3 games of their Finals series.
If Tatum wants the respect of being a superstar-level athlete, he has to show up this season. The All-Star starter has maintained his level of play admirably through the first 50 games of the season. Let’s see if he can keep this up for the final stretch and then into the playoffs as well, as all legendary stars before him have done.
