Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is ‘willing to take the pay cut’ that may be required for him to stay at Old Trafford, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.
The 32-year-old is enjoying a solid season for the Red Devils despite a tricky opening few weeks, but his future at the club remains firmly up in the air at this moment in time.
Manchester United news – David de Gea
At the beginning of January, The Telegraph claimed that De Gea was due to sign a new deal on reduced terms after signalling his willingness to accept a cut to his current £375,000-a-week wages.
“I hope so,” the Spain international said when asked if he was confident that he would finish his career at United. “Yeah, I’m very relaxed [about the contract], just focussed on training, performing as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano then informed GMS that the 20-time English champions ‘are speaking’ to De Gea and that tying him down to fresh terms is the ‘priority’ over signing a replacement.
With just six months remaining on his current contract, though, time is starting run out for the experienced shot-stopper to secure his future at United.
What has Jones said about De Gea?
When asked about the futures of Marcus Rashford, who only has 18 months remaining on his existing deal, and Dea Gea, Jones told GMS ‘there’s no way’ the pair are leaving.
He said: “There’s no way, at the moment, those two are going to be leaving. They’re a big part of this new culture at United and are certainly part of what Erik ten Hag is building.
“I know that in the past, obviously, a lot has been made of De Gea’s distribution and whether he can fit in, but he’s having a reasonably good season. He wants to stay and seems willing to take the pay cut that would be necessary for him to stay.”
How has De Gea played this season?
De Gea was in goal for the humiliating defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford that kickstarted United’s 2022/23 campaign in disappointing circumstances.
However, just like the majority of his teammates, the 6 foot 4 shot-stopper has been much improved since then, and his statistics show that.
In his 29 appearances across all competitions, De Gea has let in just 30 goals, keeping 13 clean sheets along the way, helping United reach the Carabao Cup final, FA Cup fifth-round, and the knockout stages of the Europa League while also battling for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
De Gea is United’s second-longest serving player after arriving for £18.9 million back in 2011, and could continue to be a key part of Erik ten Hag is building at the club.
