Two considerably more ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs animals ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋed an antelope that was rushing into a river to escape a pack of wild dogs. Two gigantic hippos in Bᴏᴛsᴡᴀɴᴀ’s Khwai River were waiting for the helpless impala and weren’t willing to let it go without a ғɪɢʜᴛ.
Before the two of the enormous animals slammed down on its body in an effort to drown it, one of the large creatures rapidly locked its jaws around the small creature. Despite being thrown around in the water, the lucky antelope was able to escape the massive creatures and reach dry land.
The images were taken by wildlife photographer Hannes Lochner, 43, in the Okavango Delta region in July of last year. He said that was the kind of sight he loved to photograph.
It was a fantastic story to watch unfold, so he was thrilled to see a happy ending. He didn’t believe that such an event had ever been portrayed. Such things most definitely don’t happen on a daily basis. After its struggle, the impala only received a Bɪᴛᴇ to its leg.
Hannes took the pictures while he saw a herd of impalas escape a pack of wild dogs. Another impala is believed to have fled into the water an hour earlier but was drowned and ᴋɪʟʟed by the fierce hippos, so this incident was not unusual. A second antelope also managed to leave completely uninjured, while a less fortunate one was eaten by a crocodile in the river.
