Some characters in One Piece’s Alabasta make things up as they go and keep everyone on their toes.
One Piece‘s second major saga, the Alabasta saga, was Luffy’s first major adventure on the fabled Grand Line. This memorable saga began when the small Straw Hat crew sailed up Reverse Mountain, then they explored Whisky Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island, and finally, Alabasta itself. Along the way, Luffy’s crew met many fascinating characters, friend and foe alike.
The Alabasta saga’s characters come in all shapes and sizes, and so do their personalities. Some of these characters are highly reliable, even predictable, such as king Nefeltari Cobra or Dalton, the former head of Drum Island’s royal guard. Meanwhile, several other Alabasta-era One Piece characters were wildly unpredictable, often surprising everyone with their improvised plans or acting on sheer impulse or instinct.
10. Nami Improvised New Techniques With Her Baton
Nami the tsundere navigator joined Luffy in the East Blue Saga, and ever since then, she has reliably navigated even the trickiest water currents and weather extremes. Personally, though, Nami can be rash or impulsive, such as when she ran off to deal with Arlong’s crew alone.
In Alabasta, Nami was unpredictable during her battle against Ms. Doublefinger, using the climate baton Usopp gave her. She surprised Ms. Doublefinger and even herself with new combinations of the baton’s parts, inventing her own weather-based fighting style as she went.
9. Ms. Merry Christmas Plays Deadly Whack-A-Mole
Ms. Merry Christmas was Mr. 4’s partner in the Alabasta saga. She ate the Diggy-Diggy Fruit, meaning she could partially morph into a giant mole and easily tunnel her way through the earth with her claws. She can easily ambush her foes from underfoot this way.
All that makes Ms. Merry Christmas difficult to track or predict in battle, giving her a serious advantage on most battlefields that have ample soil or sand. Usopp and Chopper struggled mightily to deal with this unpredictable fighting style and Mr. 4’s baseball-themed attacks.
8. Smoker & Luffy Have A Loose, Conditional Partnership At Times
Normally, Captain Smoker is a highly reliable and fairly predictble duty-bound Marine, as his ally Tashigi can attest to. When it comes to the Straw Hat pirates, though, Smoker’s stance is more ambiguous and prone to change, which makes him somewhat unpredictable.
Smoker isn’t entirely sure whether to consider Luffy a criminal or merely a rogue who needs to be taught a lesson. Smoker might even team up with Luffy, such as when Crocodile captured them in Rain Dinners and they faced certain doom together. Later, Smoker let Luffy go, which came as a surprise to many.
7. Portgas D Ace Goes Wherever He Pleases
Luffy’s foster brother, Portgas D Ace, is one of Whitebeard’s division commanders and likes to freely wander the Grand Line as he pleases. Ace is utterly loyal to Whitebeard and will always help his little brother Luffy, but otherwise, he’s not easy to predict or read.
Ace appeared in the Alabasta desert kingdom, where he greeted the Straw Hats and gave Luffy his vivre card, just in case. Ace then ran off on his own business, and One Piece fans eventually saw him rashly go after Captain Blackbeard himself on Banaro Island.
6. Mr. 3 Can Make Anything Out Of Wax
The Baroque Works agent called Mr. 3 isn’t too rash or unpredictable as a person, but his Wax-Wax Fruit does make him a flexible, resourceful, and somewhat unpredictable fighter. He mainly appeared on Little Island, where he captured Zoro, Vivi, and Nami on a giant wax creation of his.
Mr. 3 can also make duplicates of himself, and when Ms. Golden Week paints them, they act as convincing decoys which allow Mr. 3 to either escape or strike the enemy from an unexpected angle. He can also create unexpected things such as a hardened mecha suit of sorts.
5. Ms. Wednesday Was Princess Nefeltari Vivi In Disguise
Princess Nefeltari Vivi loves her kingdom, and she will reliably serve it to the best of her ability. Still, Vivi has her benign troublemaker side, such as when she tried making fireworks as a kid, and how she often wandered into forbidden areas on a whim.
In the Alabasta saga, Vivi surprised the Straw Hats with her disguise, presenting herself as Ms. Wednesday before her true identity was revealed. And with time running out to save her kingdom, Vivi started making rash and reckless decisions that even Luffy, of all people, cautioned her against.
4. Mr. 2 Bon Clay Can Be Anyone, Anywhere
The flamboyant Mr. 2 Bon Clay ate the Clone-Clone Fruit, which allows him to perfectly mimic anyone whom he has seen and touched. He demonstrated this when he first met the Straw Hats, such as impersonating Luffy and Vivi before the two parties parted ways.
When operating under Sir Crocodile’s orders, Mr. 2 becomes far more dangerous and unpredictable. He will gladly use his shapeshifting ways to spy on his enemies, wreak havoc on enemy kingdoms, and confuse his enemies with his disguises. He even posed as king Cobra to destabilize the entire kingdom.
3. Monkey D Luffy Makes It Up As He Goes
In any One Piece saga or arc, protagonist Monkey D Luffy will always rank among the most impulsive, proactive, and unpredictable characters of all, which fans find exciting and his crewmates find exasperating. Luffy did this all throughout Alabasta, usually for the better.
Luffy decided at the last moment to make himself Laboon’s rival, so Laboon could look forward to meeting him again someday. Luffy also made some rash decisions in Alabasta itself, such as parting with the crew to fight Crocodile. He then ran after Crocodile again, using many improved moves such as his water barrel to even the odds.
2. Wapol Of Tin Will Eat Anything
In the Drum Island arc, Luffy’s crew visited the snowy Drum Island, where the obnoxious but cruel Wapol once ruled as a king until the Blackbeard pirates chased him off. Wapol and his pirate crew suddenly attacked Luffy off Drum Islands’ shores, then Wapol appeared again to fight on land.
Wapol can eat anything and modify his body accordingly, making him one of One Piece‘s most resourceful characters of all. He will impulsively eat anything or even anyone around him, including houses and his minions, so he can gain new powers to fight the Straw Hats with.
1. Nico Robin Supported & Fought Almost Everyone On Her Own Accord
Nico Robin is a dark-haired kuudere who was introduced as Ms. All-Sunday, Crocodile’s partner and the user of the Flower-Flower Fruit. From the very start, Nico Robin had One Piece fans uneasy with her unpredictable and mysterious behavior.
Nico Robin helped and hindered almost every major player in the Alabasta saga, so it was unclear where her true loyalties lay or what her real goal was. She fought the Straw Hats, saved Luffy, turned on Crocodile, then suddenly appeared on the Going Merry and asked to join the crew, just like that.
