Tottenham will reportedly see the perhaps unwelcome return of one their loan players in the summer amid claims he has fallen foul of Diego Simeone.
Sergio Reguilon was allowed to depart N17 during the summer window after falling down the pecking order under Antonio Conte. A £25m signing in the Jose Mourinho era, he made a strong start to life with Tottenham.
However, his form quickly fell off and he quickly found himself out of the picture under Conte’s management. As such, and despite the Tottenham system preferred under Conte seemingly playing to his strengths, he was allowed to depart.
Indeed, the capture of veteran Croatian star Ivan Perisic told Reguilon all he needed to know about his future at the club.
So when the chance came to sign for Atletico Madrid last summer, it appeared the best option for all parties involved. Signing as a replacement for Nottingham Forest bound Renan Lodi, the 25-year-old moved to the Wanda Metropolitano on loan for the season.
And while that deal did not contain an option to buy, it’s believed all parties would have been open to a permanent move if the move was deemed a success.
However, the back to the Spanish capital has not worked out for the former Real Madrid man. Indeed, Reguilon has made just five appearances in all competitions for the Rojoblancos.
Now, according to reports in Spain, Reguilon has fallen foul of Simeone’s demands at Atletico.
And they claim the fiery Argentine coach is losing patience with the player’s inability to meet his expectations.
Now it seems the writing is on the wall with Simeone ready to send Reguilon back when the loan expires in the summer.
Reguilon set for Tottenham return
Sadly for Simeone, that will have to happen at the end of the current campaign. Indeed, it is believed only Tottenham had the right to recall Reguilon to north London had they chosen to do so in the January window.
However, the fact they didn’t opt to do so, despite his lack of action, does not bode well for the player.
Having arrived at the club with an injury, Simeone has reportedly been left disappointed by Reguilon’s ability to match his standards.
And according to Estadio Deportivo, Reguilon will be sent back this summer after branding him ‘one of the disappointments of the season’.
Perhaps more damningly, they report that Simeone has lost faith in Reguilon and is ‘disillusioned’ by his level of play.
His red card after just 22 minutes against Almeria last month was reportedly the final straw as far as Simeone is concerned.
And with Reinildo Mandava now ahead of him in the pecking order, there are doubts if Reguilon will play for Atletico again.
With the player now due to return to Spurs, he faces a very uncertain future should Conte remain at the helm.

He is contracted to the club until summer 2025 and the club look unlikely to get anywhere near like the fee paid for his services.
A one-time target of Manchester United, Real Madrid also have a £27.5m buy-back clause in that deal.
However, Spurs will be lucky to get half of that fee now. As such, they may prefer to send him on loan again next season in a hope that he can recapture some of his form.
