Manchester United reportedly submitted a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.
According to Spanish outlet Nacional, the Red Devils are interested in signing the Uruguayan and want to take advantage of his fluctuating form by bringing him to Old Trafford.
The Spanish giants have overseen several dismal performances and results following the World Cup and Valverde has reportedly been one player who has failed to make a strong impact on games.
Valverde will be key in Europe
An opportunity to prove himself could be in the coming weeks when Real return to Champions League action in a bid to go back-to-back as reigning winners.
They face Liverpool in the Round of 16 and will travel to Anfield on February 21, before hosting the Merseyside club at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 15.
The clubs came head-to-head in last season’s final, with the tie ultimately swinging in Real’s favour – securing their 14th trophy in the competition.
Bruno Fernandes reacts as Kobbie Mainoo signs new deal
Manchester United’s stars have welcomed the news Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new ‘long term’ contract extension.
Mainoo’s new deal was announced by United, with the 17-year-old rewarded for his recent rise to the United first team.
The teenager wrote on Instagram: “Amazing few weeks for me and my family. Really pleased to sign a long term contract with this special club. Continuing to work hard and taking everything step by step.”
He made his first team debut in January in the Carabao Cup quarter-final as a starter.
Mainoo also featured a fortnight ago in United’s FA Cup win over Reading and was on the bench this week for the Premier League clash with Leeds.
The FA Youth Cup winner is held in high regard by his colleagues, with Bruno Fernandes reaching out to praise him. He sent an Instagram story about Mainoo’s contract extension which said, ‘well deserved’.
There were more messages too in response to Mainoo’s Instagram post, with Facundo Pellistri, Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Elanga and Zidane Iqbal among those to congratulate the teenager.
Midfield talent Mainoo could soon get more opportunities amid injuries to Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek.
The long-term deal and admiration from his teammates will give Mainoo even more confidence to take the next step if he gets the chance.
