The Nugu reservoir near Bandipur was home to a wild elephant that was entangled in a fishing net and had to be freed by forest service personnel.
Around six in the morning, the elephant was first spotted in the reservoir. Elephants frequently moved around the Nugu reservoir and its surroundings, creating a buffer zone for the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, therefore the tusker did not draw much notice.
However, after the elephant appeared to have been trapped for a considerable amount of time, locals started to worry that soᴍᴇᴛʜing was amiss. A Special Tiger Protection Force unit as well as forest service employees and teams from the Bandipur, Sargur, and Nugu regions arrived at the location. They launched a motorboat to get a better look at the elephant, but the disruption caused by their presence did not cause it to move.
For almost three hours, the elephant did not budge from its position. According to a forest official, it was rare and confirmed their concerns that it was caught in a fishing net. According to S.R. Natesh, director of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, the rescue team swept the surrounding nets with bamboo and hooks in order to liberate the elephant’s legs.
It took almost five hours to complete the rescue. The elephant then swam over to the reservoir’s shore. It exited the water before heading back to the jungle.
According to experts, that was a challenging circumstance because saving any animal in the water, especially an elephant, is ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs for both the animal and the rescue squad. Additionally, tranquilizers are not applied in such circumstances.
