With the hugely awaited UFC 284 finally coming to an end, the last 24 hours could be considered probably the best of this whole year. The UFC Lightweight king Islam Makhachev finally put an end to the promotion’s Featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski‘s insane win streak. Also, some of the UFC’s former and current stars were disgusted by the scoring of the match. They clearly stood against the way in which the judges had scored the bout. Islam Makhachev stops the victory train of Alexander Volkanovski
The UFC audience all around the world had been eagerly awaiting the coveted UFC 284 main event. The pre-fight speculations and predictions from the UFC fans were also numerous. But it all finally ended with a bit of disappointment with the fans of Alexander Volkanovski.
The UFC Lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev stopped ‘Volk’s’ victory run at the UFC 284 main event. The Dagestani bagged a unanimous decision victory against his Australian rival in his own country, shattering the 22-fight win streak he held to date.
However, the Australian crowd was quite unhappy about the post-bout results. Makhachev received a lot of boos during his post-fight interview.
UFC stars express disgust over the ambiguous scorecard of the UFC 284 main event
Many MMA fans around the world would happily name the UFC 284, the event of the year to date. Also, the coveted main event definitely served up to the ‘champion vs champion’ hype that was created around it. The 5-round war between the UFC Lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev, and the former UFC no.1 pound-for-pound fighter, Alexander Volkanovski, ended with a victory for the former via a unanimous decision.
However, one of the judges, Derek Cleary, scored the almost evenly matched up bout 49-46, in favor of Makhachev. This, in turn, revoked massive responses from UFC fighters and veterans who bashed the ambiguous scoring from Derek Cleary. The UFC champ-champ and commentator, Daniel Cormier, was one of the most prominent figures who bashed Cleary’s scoring, calling it “a bad scorecard”.
The UFC’s ‘West Coast Gangster’, Nate Diaz, chose to stand against the entire decision of the judges. To him, Volkanovski had won the bout. Diaz also expressed his opinions with a tweet.
The noted UFC Bantamweight, Marlon Vera, also showcased similar thoughts as he too put out a tweet after ‘Volk’s’ so-called shocking defeat. ‘Chito’ was also of the opinion that ‘The Great’ had won the bout.
Many would agree that the MMA world stood divided after the end of UFC 284 main event.
Dana White revealed his long-term plans of popularizing the sport
The UFC supremo, Dana White, revealed his plans of popularizing the sport and bringing up new talents. In his interview with the ESPN Deportes MMA writer Carlos Contreras Legaspi, White also revealed that he already built their third Performance Institute in Mexico. He further talked about how he was aiming to build the next up in Abu Dhabi.
White then added that he would also be eyeing to open a UFC PI in Africa as well. After the Mexico UFC PI went fully operational, the ‘Power Slap League head honcho’ stated that he would be expecting a “Mexican Invasion” in the UFC within the next 5 years.
