The DC Universe films, as fans know them, are ending, and with Gal Gadot likely out as Wonder Woman, a Shazam Family actor could replace her.
Wonder Woman made her big screen live-action debut in 2016 before finally receiving her first solo movie a year afterward. The role put actor Gal Gadot on the map in a way her appearances in the Fast & Furious franchise hadn’t. That’s all likely coming to a close, but the next cinematic Wonder Woman may be hiding in plain sight.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe films are recasting Superman and Batman, with Wonder Woman likely not far behind. One actor who could fill Gadot’s tiara is Grace Caroline Currey, who’s already gained superhero experience through the Shazam! movies. Here’s why the Shazam! Fury of the Gods actor could work well as the new Amazing Amazon.
Gal Gadot’s Time as Wonder Woman Is Likely Coming to a Close
As mentioned, the DC Universe films are winding down, with the upcoming movie The Flash planned to reboot things and start mostly anew for DC’s heroes. And it’s already been announced that Superman in Superman: Legacy and Batman in The Brave and the Bold will be played by new actors, and it’s unlikely that Gadot will retain the role of Wonder Woman. Having her return would confuse casual viewers from a continuity standpoint when the rest of the Trinity are played by fresh faces. And with rumors about Jason Momoa jumping ship to play Lobo in the new continuity and Ezra Miller’s future as Barry Allen up in the air, this would only make sense.
Momoa’s fate also reflects something that Gunn has discussed doing in terms of switching out actors for new roles in the rebooted universe. It may be mere rumor and conjecture, but it would allow other actors to return to the DCU to play new characters. With Wonder Woman now in need of a new actor, perhaps the best lady for the job is someone who’s already made DC her home, albeit as a far less popular superhero.
Mary Marvel’s Actor Is Perfect for the New Wonder Woman
Grace Caroline Currey portrayed Mary Bromfield in Shazam!, and she returns to play her both as a young adult and a superhero in the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Some fans have already created fan art of her as Wonder Woman, and it’s admittedly a good casting. Currey portrays the kindness and innocence of her character in Shazam!, and these traits are necessary in order to make Wonder Woman feel alive on the big screen. Plus, the magical nature of the World’s Mightiest Mortal and his family is very similar to the mythology of Wonder Woman, making the transition easy to imagine. In terms of star power, she’s no less of a star than Gadot was when she was cast to appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And it would actually work for the better in terms of long-term casting for the DC Universe films, which is likely something David Zaslav and Gunn are thinking about.
Again, it also fits the idea of previous DC actors coming back in other roles, and in the case of Currey playing Wonder Woman, it’d definitely be a step up. The first Shazam! didn’t exactly put her on the map, and the barely-marketed sequel is unlikely to do the job, either. Being the new Wonder Woman would likely do the trick, and her resembling the character so much would make her an easy sell to both audiences and hardcore DC fans. While the power of Shazam might not have lit up Currey’s career or the box office, Zeus’ lightning could make her into the most wonderful superheroine ever.
To see Grace Caroline Currey as a member of the Shazam Family, Shazam! Fury of the Gods premieres Mar. 17.
