Vegapunk is in a tough situation, but can this Straw Hat crew member get him out of it?
One Piece fans were left shocked by the revelation in Chapter 1078. Oda had been teasing the fans for a long time with the possibility of revealing the identity of the Egghead Island traitor. Unlike the Kanjuro reveal, when many fans had already figured out his identity, no one foresaw the Egghead Island traitor being one of the satellites.
One Piece Chapter 1078 confirmed that York is the traitor who betrayed Stella and all the other people on Egghead Island. There wasn’t even a shred of evidence that supported the idea that York was the traitor. In fact, York was among the first satellites to be attacked by the Seraphim. This drew all the attention away from York, but it turned out to be a red herring. York’s betrayal has raised a lot of questions, the biggest being, “Why did she do it?”
Why Did York Betray Vegapunk
Considering the satellites were free to do what they wanted and had very few restrictions, it wouldn’t make sense for one of them to betray the others unless they received something special in return. In the chapter, York is seen calling the Five Elders multiple times and telling them about Vegapunk’s betrayal and his decision to study the Void Century, which is the biggest secret of the World Government. York managed to strike a deal with the Five Elders that would allow her to become a Celestial Dragon.
When York revealed her reasons to Vegapunk, the latter was flabbergasted, as he thought all the satellites absolutely despised the people of Marijoa. Considering York is the embodiment of Vegapunk’s greed, it does make sense why she would be tempted by the power of the Celestial Dragons.
York’s information led the World Government to start making plans to erase Vegapunk and Egghead Island from existence, just like Ohara. The only difference is that Ohara didn’t have any technology to protect itself, but Egghead does. Due to this reason, the World Government decided to go to Egghead with a vast army. They sent CP0, Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, Admiral Kizaru, and hundreds of Navy battleships. Everything points toward a massive war taking place on Egghead Island, and it is reasonable to assume that there will be several casualties. With the World Government trying to replicate the massacre of Ohara, the Straw Hats will be in grave danger if they do not act quickly.
One thing that still remains unknown is what else York is using as leverage against the World Government. She is not foolish to trust them completely. There is a chance that York could be using the information about the Void Century as a bargaining chip, and that would make sense as the World Government is fearful of the truth coming out in the open. Whether that is the case remains to be seen.
Where Is Robin?
The latest chapter also gave screen time to Robin, Chopper, and Atlas. The three of them were in 2F Building A, and they were discussing the possibility of Vegapunk’s life being under threat. Eventually, Atlas told the two Straw Hats about the old laboratory, which has been locked up for a long time. As soon as they heard Atlas’ words, they decided to head to this place.
It will take some time for the trio to reach the basement, and there is a chance that they might be intercepted by S-Hawk, who ran away from 4F. However, Zoro and Kaku are chasing him, and they might catch up to him before he finds Robin and co. S-Snake is also free, and in case she catches up to the trio, maybe Chopper and Atlas will fight her.
How She Can Save Vegapunk
Nico Robin is one of the strongest fighters among the Straw Hat Pirates. She used to be an assassin before becoming a pirate. Judging by the current bounty of the Straw Hat Pirates, Robin is the fifth-strongest fighter of the crew after the Monster Trio and Jimbei. During the Wano Country arc, Robin was able to defeat Black Maria, who was one of the Tobi Roppo. It was due to her efforts that Sanji was able to successfully get away and fight Queen. Robin needed a big push because, since the time skip, she has not been involved in many serious fights.
If she manages to reach the basement, Robin can easily overwhelm York. She can sprout her limbs on York’s body and take her down, thus saving Vegapunk from certain death. However, Robin needs to act quickly, as there is not much time left. York has openly stated that she thinks it’s better if there is only Vegapunk. York has already killed Shaka, and everything points toward the main body being next. Or she might hand him over to the World Government, which will only make things worse. The next chapter of One Piece will reveal more information about York’s betrayal and whether Robin can reach Vegapunk in time. In addition to York’s betrayal, fans will be hoping that some part of Bonney and Kuma’s past is also disclosed.
