Christian Pulisic has had another impressive game for his country in this international break. He always looks so much better for the USA than for Chelsea, probably because they play a lot of games against teams like Grenada.
But he can also put it down to being used out of position at times, and when you hear him speak about where he likes to be used, it’s not in the false 9 role we saw him taking up in recent matches for the Blues.
“I think I’ve demonstrated qualities in a few different attacking positions; I feel like my best position on the field is something like being in behind a striker, potentially off of the left side, but having a bit of freedom to manoeuvre, understanding where I need to be to create and help my team score goals,” Pulisic said in quotes on the official Chelsea website.
“I definitely feel stronger when I can come in inside onto my right foot. And dribbling or running in behind is another strength of mine. So yeah: that area underneath the striker, potentially from the left side is my best position.”
It doesn’t seem like he’s being deliberately pointed about it, and he must just be happy to be getting chances in the first team given he’s looking likely to be sold this summer. But he’s also not hiding the fact that he’s regularly being used outside his favoured spot on the left wing at the moment.
This weekend could see him restored to his favoured left wing however, with Kai Havertz possibly out with the flu, Graham Potter will have to reshuffle his front line.
