Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Benedict Cumberbatch reveals a trick he uses to stop Tom Holland from blurting out big MCU spoilers.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Cumberbatch revealed he’s Tom Holland’s “babysitter,” preventing the younger actor from accidentally leaking Marvel Cinematic Universe spoilers to the press.
When asked on LADbible TV if he could trust Spider-Man performer Tom Holland with a spoiler, Cumberbatch said, “We’re throwing the guy under the bus a bit.” He then commented on Holland’s tendency to come close to revealing major spoilers, stating, “I’m beginning to think now he just does it so that I can be seen as a babysitter. Just making wild noises. Yeah, I put my hand over his mouth and all sorts.”
Cumberbatch’s Multiverse of Madness co-star Elizabeth Olsen sympathized with Holland’s excitement over the films he works on. Olsen revealed that it was hard for herself to keep spoilers a secret off-camera as well, but both she and Cumberbatch stressed the importance of actors remembering to keep plot details under wraps.
Cumberbatch explained that he and Holland were often paired up during the filming of Avengers: Infinity War. He described the process as “diving on grenades left, right, and center;” however, he also said Holland’s spoiler tendencies brightened up his day, and Cumberbatch expressed relief at appearing more tight-lipped in comparison. He joked that Holland might have been doing it on purpose. “I think possibly he’s like, ‘Right, Cumberbatch, let’s see how quick you answer.’ No, of course, I’m joking,” he said.

Olsen said she found Holland’s behavior to be charming, but reiterated he would have to “figure it out.” Cumberbatch reminded her that Holland was privy to a lot of MCU secrets, and it was more important for him than most MCU actors not to reveal a franchise’s giveaways.
Cumberbatch and Holland have co-starred in several MCU films, including the most recent Spider-Man film, No Way Home. When the Doctor Strange actor told Olsen he was frequently unaware of big spoilers before starting an MCU project anyway, she agreed. Olsen said that she usually only finds out exactly what she’s going to be doing on a film a couple of weeks before she arrives on set, and Cumberbatch replied that he only found out on the morning of shooting a scene.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently showing in theaters.
