Following the year’s first international break, Real Madrid emphatically resumed their campaign, securing a 6-0 win over Real Valladolid on Sunday.
However, the victory was inconsequential in the overall look of the league table, with Barcelona still holding a formidable 12-point advantage at the top. Real Madrid, too, are aware of this difference and the fact that chasing the league title might be a lost cause.
According to MARCA (h/t RM4Arab), Real Madrid are set for a slight change in team management as we approach the final phase of the campaign.
With Barça seemingly in control of the race for the league title, Real Madrid are expected to make a lot of rotation to their starting eleven, during the remainder of the league campaign.
This will be done in order to provide much-needed breathers to star players, including ageing stars such as Luka Modric, who has been a hot topic lately, as the club have posed concerns over his international duties with Croatia.
With La Liga a lost cause at this point, Real Madrid are set to focus on the cup competitions during the remainder of the season.
The Whites are notably taking on Barcelona this midweek, in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal. In order to advance to the final, the club require a victory of a two-goal margin, having lost the first leg 1-0.
Meanwhile, in the Champions League, Real Madrid have been drawn against Chelsea in the quarterfinal stage. The Spanish giants are coming on the back of a thumping 6-2 victory over Liverpool in the Round of 16 stage.
Given the club’s poor performances in La Liga, Real Madrid’s fate in the Champions League this season could go a long way in dictating the future of Ancelotti this coming summer.
