While the news was well-received by many eager fans, some were angry the 1997 chart-topping tune Barbie Girl by Aqua wasn’t being used, while others called for Britney Spears to be the singer of the tune.
A spokeswoman for Dua declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline.
As well as writing a pop anthem for the live action film, Dua is also set to star as a Barbie doll, alongside Margot as the leading version of the character.
A first-look snap shared to the Barbie movie’s official Instagram page showed Dua dressed as a mermaid version of the iconic Mattel doll, who has taken many forms.
The Levitating hitmaker showed off her incredible figure in a shimmering blue bralet and matching skirt as she embodied a mermaid.
She accessorised her sensational look with a beaded necklace and hoop earrings, while she opted for a blue eyeshadow palette.
Dua sported a vibrant blue wig which cascaded across her shoulders in glamorous waves to complete the look.
Alongside the snap, her role was revealed in a caption, which read: ‘Dua Lipa. This Barbie is a mermaid.’
Reacting to the news, eager fans took to the comments section to gush over her and share their excitement that she will star as a Barbie doll.

Dua will star as just one version of Barbie as the iconic doll will be brought to life by an array of stars, who will each take on an aspect of the versatile character.
Sex Education’s Emma Mackey will star as a Barbie who has a ‘Nobel Prize in physics’ while Nicola Coughlan will star as a diplomat version of the doll.
With Margot leading the all-inclusive cast, Hari Nef will play a doctor version of the doll while Sharon Rooney will play a Barbie lawyer and Alexandra Shipp will be an author.
The wider cast also includes Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Rhea Pearlman, Emerald Fennell, Scott Evans, Ritu Aryau, Jamie Demetriou and Marisa Abela.
Speculation about Dua’s involvement in the project was first teased when the official Instagram for the film was launched.
The account followed 15 people involved with the movie, including Dua, which prompted speculation that she would appear.
Her break into acting comes after Dua became a household name in 2018 when her single, One Kiss, topped charts around the world.
A year later, she won the Brit Award for Song of the Year and scooped best new artist and best dance recording prizes at the Grammys.
Last year, it was revealed she had left her management company TaP music and is now managed by her father, Dukagjin.
As well as starring in the Barbie movie, Dua will take on another acting role as she will have an undisclosed role in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming spy thriller Argylle.
Details about the upcoming Barbie movie, which wrapped filming last July, have been kept closely guarded, but a teaser trailer was released in December.
The trailer saw Margot embody Barbie in a black-and-white one piece swimsuit as she posed on a beach while children gazed on at her before throwing their own baby dolls away.
The scene was a spin on the imposing monolith in the classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the sci-fi movie’s score being used to drive home the point that Barbie is a mysterious new wonder.
Ryan also made an appearance as Ken as he sported a black top and headband with friends, including Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa, surrounding him.
In another scene, Barbie was seen looking glamorous in a sparkling silver dress as she danced the night away in a club.
Exciting: The much-anticipated romantic comedy, based on the eponymous Mattel doll line, also stars Ryan as Barbie’s longtime love interest Ken

A sneak peak was also given at Barbie’s plastic world – a pink town that resembled the popular 1980s Barbie toys, including pink and white townhouses and convertible cars.
The film is based on the fashion doll line by Mattel, where the CEO Mattell Ynon Kreiz said the company expected the Barbie product to continue growing, adding: ‘We couldn’t be more excited about Barbie’s long-term prospects.’
The Barbie brand generated over £1 billion in gross sales last year and the doll turned 64 this week, first debuting the original on March 9, 1959.
The highly-anticipated live action film will be released on July 21, 2023.
