Luka Modric is one of the greatest players in Real Madrid history. When he was signed from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 at 26 years of age and struggled out of the gates, chances of the Croatian being a historic success story at Santiago Bernabeu were believed to be slim to none. And yet here we are, more than a decade later, and he is consider by many as the best midfielder of his generation and has won the UEFA Champions League five times till now.
Modric’s long-term future at the club is uncertain though. The Croatian is 37 years of age and his current deal runs out at the end of this campaign. He is yet to be handed an extension though.
Initially, the expectations were that Modric would be handed a one-year extension. His form has been inconsistent after the World Cup though and questions have been raised about his future.
As reported by GOAL, Modric is uncomfortable with his contract situation at Real Madrid. Club officials have yet to contact him or his representatives to kickstart extension talks.
Real Madrid fans won’t be happy with Modric news
It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal. Modric is an all-time legend and most Real Madrid fans would want to see him continue on for another year. Rumours have suggested that he wants to stay as well.
Yes, at 37 years of age, Modric is not a long-term solution in the middle of the park. But on his day, he is still capable of producing an outstanding performance. The Croatian also has the habit of rising to the occasion. He is very much still a part of first-team plans as well.
Real Madrid will have an extremely tough time replacing Modric. And it remains to be seen if he is eventually handed a contract extension or not.
