The event celebrates awards granted by the Academy’s Board of Governors – the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Honorary Award.
This year’s honorary Oscars will go to directors Peter Weir and Euzhan Palcy, and songwriter Diane Warren, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Michael J. Fox. Weir is a six-time Oscar nominee, best known for Witness, Dead Poets Society, and Master and Commander.
Meanwhile Palcy made history at the 1983 Venice Film Festival when her first film, Sugar Cane Alley took the Silver Lion, as the first for a Black female director, as well as any Black director. Warren has received 13 Best Original Song nominations, and is now the first recipient of an honorary Oscar in the music branch.
