Kylian Mbappé is on course for his fifth consecutive Ligue 1 Uber Eats top scorer award after hitting a brace in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 win over Angers SCO on Friday night.
Mbappé got lucky with his first, mis-hitting Juan Bernat’s volleyed cutback before scoring at the second time of asking, and he added his league-leading 22nd of the season midway through the first half, rounding Paul Bernardoni and slotting home after a fine Lionel Messi through-ball.
Mbappé’s haul moves him two clear of LOSC’s Jonathan David, with Olympique Lyonnais striker Alexandre Lacazette completing the podium on 19 goals.
“Kylian scores, above all, for the team,” said PSG manager Galtier. “[But] he has this personality and obsession with breaking records. There’s the league title but also the title of top scorer.
“He’s made like that, a competitor for the team and on a personal level. And when he doesn’t score, he’s very grumpy.”
Mbappé is now three goals clear of Edinson Cavani as PSG’s all-time top scorer with 203, and he also has more goal-involvements (157 goals and 57 assists) than any other player apart from Dimitri Payet since Opta started recording such statistics in 2006.
“It was unfortunate to concede two goals so quickly,” reflected Galtier’s opposite number Alexandre Dujeux. “But managing how deep we play against Mbappé is difficult. How we mobilised the players is still a source of great pride.”
