Patrice Evra explains his clash with Man City staff after their Champions League victory over Real Madrid… and Man United legend says it was sparked by ‘s***’ comments a year ago

Patrice Evra has revealed the reason behind his on-pitch confrontation with Manchester City staff after the Citizens’ Champions League semi-final win over Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola’s City saw off the record winners with a thrilling 4-0 win at the Etihad to go through to the final – where they will face Inter on June 3 – which prompted unsurprisingly exuberant celebrations from the home bench.

However, Manchester United legend Evra was seen in a row with a member of the City backroom staff after the final whistle, with the confrontation eventually diffused by Guardiola’s assistant Manel Estiarte.

Evra claimed that the staff member aimed their celebrations specifically at him after comments he had made in 2022, when City threw away a lead to crash out against the same opponents at the same stage of the competition in extra time.

After clashing with his former rivals, the ex-France left back then crashed CBS Sports Golaazo’s post-match comments on the game in an eventful feature in which he swore twice, labelled Micah Richards a ‘Christmas tree’ and shouted ‘I love this game!’ before walking off.

‘He was looking at me like “this is for you” so I came close and asked him, “why are you shouting, why are you so agitated?”

‘So he said that last year I said they “s*** themselves” on TV, which is why they lost against Real Madrid, but this year they didn’t s*** themselves.

‘That’s the truth Micah [Richards]! You know I’m an honest man I’m straight and after he apologised.’

The 42-year-old, dressed in an all-red suit, was at the Etihad working as a TV pundit on Wednesday night.

Footage shows Estiarte holding the former France international’s arms and gesticulating for him to calm down for some time.

Guardiola’s assistant appeared to have succeeded in breaking the tension on an understandably emotional night for City, with the pair then shaking hands before going their separate ways.

On his arrival at the CBS set, Evra was quick to quash talk of the question of Man City’s treble pursuit being largely a formality now, with their stunning win over Los Blancos.

‘By the way there’s one game left, so don’t celebrate yet. You didn’t win yet, so calm down, tranquillo, as the Italians say,’ he claimed, with City now on the cusp of matching Man United’s record as the only English side to win a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League title in the same campaign.

The Citizens are just three points from securing a third consecutive Premier League crown, before taking on United in the FA Cup final and facing Inter in June.

And Evra was not quite finished, joking with Jamie Carragher about his feud with BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand – and a former team-mate of the 42-year-old’s.

‘When you saw Ferdy, did you say “hello my favourite clown?”‘ Evra asked the former Liverpool star.

The pair appeared to laugh off their apparent feud on the night, shaking hands eventually following a light-hearted rivalry between the Sky Sports and BT Sport pundits.
