The Man City boss praised the former Man United ace as he paid tribute to Pele
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has named former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the “eternal” talents of football during a touching tribute to Pele.
The Brazilian legend passed away on Thursday evening. Those across the football world united to pay tribute to the 82-year-old with United’s Brazilian stars Casemiro, Antony and Fred sending poignant messages.
During City’s press conference ahead of their clash with Everton, Guardiola paid tribute to Pele and named several players who he felt transcended the sport, including Ronaldo. He told reporters: “I never pretend to be Pele, honestly.
“I never saw him play, I spoke with people who said he was the greatest for them. What he has done, not just winning three World Cups, the goals and he was a new thing when he came up.
“I was not born when he was playing. It’s like a good movie, the legacy that we’re still talking about him, about a good movie, a good book, because he was so good.
“Pele, [Diego] Maradona, [Johan] Cruyff, [Lionel] Messi, [Franz] Beckenbauer, Cristiano Ronaldo, these players will be eternal. They have done many things for many years, these types of players make our business, our job, a better place.
“What he produced for the feeling for the people. We have seen the World Cup, one team can produce for a country, it’s incredible.
“It’s not another event can produce this emotion. This part of exceptional players can produce the emotion for the players.”
Ronaldo left Old Trafford in November following his controversial interview with Piers Morgan. During the conversation, the 37-year-old openly criticised the club, Erik ten Hag, the Glazers and some of his old teammates who had spoken out against him.
The Portugal international was the only free agent at the World Cup in Qatar and would be eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Morocco.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez had to get in the back of his new £250,000 Rolls Royce despite paying for the supercar.
While we were all getting Lynx Africa sets and new socks, Ronaldo received the luxury vehicle to add to his impressive car collection.
She posted a video where she surprised her other half, with the car having a bow on it and Santa Claus stood beside.
Ronaldo looked absolutely delighted with his gift, which follows up the £600,000 Mercedes G Wagon he was given by Georgina for his 35th birthday.
However, despite being the one who secured the top of the range whip, Georgina had to sit in the backseat during a recent date night.
A viral video showed the couple leaving a restaurant in Madrid and jumping in the Phantom. Ronaldo was escorted into the passenger seat while a chauffeur was doing the driving.
She didn’t look too distraught, however, and posted a picture of him in the back on her Instagram story.
Ronaldo’s other cars in his garage include a Ferrari F430, a Lamborghini Aventador, Maserati GranCabrio, Bugatti Centodieci, Bentley Continental GTC and McLaren Senna.
We’re not too clued up on whether Georgina gets front seat privileges in those vehicles.
In the past, Luis Suarez went viral for making his wife sit in the back so that Lionel Messi could sit in the front.
The South American were attending an event hosted by Jordi Alba in 2019, with the entire Barcelona squad turning out along with staff and their families.
Suarez and Messi travelled together and a picture of them on their way to the party at the Hotel Sofia went viral.
Messi was allowed to be the passenger princess but that meant that Suarez’s other half Sofia Balbi had to sit in the back.
Ronaldo is still currently without a club having had his Manchester United contracted by mutual contest, though his son has now found a new employer.
Cristiano Ronaldo Jr has returned to Real Madrid, ending the trend of moving to a team his father doesn’t play for.
