Luka Doncic and LeBron James look like very similar players in different eras with different skill sets. While LeBron is arguably the most physically gifted athlete to ever enter the NBA, Doncic is a true child prodigy that has the size of a forward but the skill set of a guard. Both dominated the league since being drafted and go from strength to strength every season.
We’ve already seen what James has achieved, with the all-time scoring record within his hand’s grasp. Many have suggested Luka Doncic will one day break the record himself, given his high-scoring output since he was drafted in 2018. However, it seems Doncic has no interest in pursuing this record.
“No way in hell… It’s always a possibility, but it’s going to be really tough. You gotta have a guy that plays for 20yrs in that shape, how he holds up his body. I am just saying without basketball skills, it’s very hard to hold that body. If you’re saying me there’s no way because I’m not playing that much. It’s amazing to watch him. It’s his 20th season and he’s scoring 30-40 points every night.”
Trivializing LeBron breaking the record by calling it a longevity statistic is incredibly silly. Achieving high performance for such a long period of time has been unprecedented up until now. We haven’t seen any player score like LeBron at age 38 and in year 20, with most players looking to retire by now.
Is Luka Doncic The Heir-Apparent To LeBron James?
As LeBron keeps aging, fans will keep wondering which player will be James’ replacement when it comes time for him to step away from the game. While many people suggest names like Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the next face of the league, Doncic might just be the choice.
Luka Doncic was an international sensation before he entered the league and has been dominating since his sophomore season. Given he is single-handedly carrying the Mavericks as how LeBron did the Cavaliers before, the parallels are all there.
The only question is whether Doncic will leave Dallas like how LeBron left the Cavs. Even if he doesn’t, it will be hard for a player to match LeBron’s or even Luka’s consistent production.
