Chelsea will be the first club to make a move for Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram, according to a report – while another suggests he is ready to reach the “next level” by changing clubs in 2023.
Thuram is into the final six months of his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach, whom he has represented since 2019. After representing France at the 2022 World Cup, the attacker has emerged onto the radar of many clubs.
For example, there have been suggestions of interest from Newcastle in recent weeks. Although, it appears their pursuit is now over.
An alternative for Thuram would be to join Manchester United, who are on the lookout for attacking reinforcements after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. They have been declared as Thuram’s preferred choice for his next destination.
However, claims are now emerging about interest from Chelsea. According to Foot Mercato, the Blues could be the first club to make their move for Thuram.
In fact, free-spending owner Todd Boehly is willing to sanction a move for Thuram in January. In that case, Chelsea would have to pay a transfer fee to Borussia Monchengladbach, rather than being able to acquire him for free when his contract expires.
The report does not clarify how much money Boehly might have set aside for a bid for Thuram.
There is also the conclusion that the 25-year-old could be torn between changing clubs in January and seeing out the season with Borussia Monchengladbach before assessing all his options.
Some clarity in that regard has emerged from a different report about Thuram, this time from ESPN.
Chelsea could help Marcus Thuram reach level he craves
It is claimed that Chelsea are joined by not just Man Utd and Newcastle, but also Arsenal, Aston Villa, AC Milan and Bayern Munich in their admiration of Thuram.
But Thuram “would equally be happy” to complete six more months with Gladbach as he would to join a new club.
In the bigger picture, though, he “is ready to take his game to the next level in a club with higher ambitions”.
A move to the Premier League could allow him to fulfil his ambitions. He is not competing in any UEFA tournament this season, so perhaps switching to Champions League contenders Chelsea could appeal.
Milan and Bayern could also offer him involvement in Europe’s top continental tournament. Alternatively, he could become part of a Premier League title challenge with Arsenal, or join the growing project at Man Utd, where Europa League football is currently on offer.

None of his suitors have made an offer yet. But if Foot Mercato is to be believed, something could be brewing from Chelsea.
Graham Potter’s side have scored fewer goals than any other side in the top half of the Premier League at present this season. Therefore, their need for attacking reinforcements is clear.
Thuram has scored 10 goals from 15 Bundesliga games so far this term. Hence, he has been much more efficient than Chelsea’s current attackers.
Able to play as a centre-forward or winger, he would also be able to complement anyone else they want to build their attack around.
But with plenty of competition for his signature, Chelsea will have to be convincing in their pitch to him.
