Manchester United’s pursuit of the loan signing of Burnley and Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst for Erik ten Hag’s squad at Old Trafford seems to be “on the right track”, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has told GiveMeSport.
The Red Devils are looking to add another centre-forward to the side after the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract last November.
Man Utd transfer news – Wout Weghorst
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are hopeful of reaching a solution with Weghorst’s parent club Burnley and loan side Besiktas in a bid to bring the Dutchman to Old Trafford for the remainder of the current campaign.
The same journalist has also indicated that both the striker and ten Hag desire the move to be pushed over the line, with the player not wanting to miss the opportunity of starring for the Premier League club.
The 30-year-old signed for Burnley last January for a fee of £12m, but the £40k-per-week star was unable to keep the Clarets afloat in the top flight and headed to Turkey in a loan move to Besiktas last summer.
Respected journalist Steve Bates recently told GiveMeSport that ten Hag was looking for a player who could fit the mould of a traditional number nine as an alternative forward option to Atlético Madrid and Portugal attacker João Félix, a profile in which the 6 foot 6 man fits.
And Taylor believes that a deal for Weghorst – who has previously been described as “astonishing” by Frank de Boer – will get over the line this month.
What has Taylor said about Weghorst and Man Utd?
When asked about the potential of Weghorst signing for United, Taylor told GiveMeSport: “I think it will happen. I think there are a lot of indications so far that the deal is very much on the right track.
“Weghorst would love to join United because who wouldn’t? It’s an amazing opportunity for someone that technically was signed to a Championship team this season, although he’s gone out on loan.”
Will Weghorst be a good signing for Man Utd?
On the face of it, United’s interest in Weghorst may seem underwhelming for the Red Devils fanbase, with the striker having only hit the back of the net twice and provided three assists in 20 Premier League appearances for Burnley last season, according to Transfermarkt.
However, the 19-time Netherlands international seems to have rediscovered his form during his time in Turkey, having scored nine goals and provided four assists in 18 appearances, according to the same stats provider.
The Borne native was brought to the attention of a global audience during the World Cup in Qatar last month, having come off the bench to score a brace against Argentina in what ultimately turned out to be a heart-breaking penalty shootout defeat for the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Whilst a move to Old Trafford does appear to have come out of the blue, as a short-term centre-forward option, ten Hag may turn to his fellow Dutchman in the hope that he scores enough goals to help United balance domestic and Europa League commitments for the remainder of the campaign.
