One of the big problems that Real Madrid face right now is the contract status of several of their players. While someone like Mariano Diaz, who does not have a role in the team, is expected to leave at the end of the season, there are several others whose potential exits would come as a blow to Los Blancos. Thus, expect, and hope, to see a number of players agree extensions over the coming months.
One of the players whose future at Real Madrid is up in the air right now is Marco Asensio. The Spaniard looked almost certain to leave a few months back but his performances seem to have impressed Carlo Ancelotti, and he has played more regularly as the season has progressed.
Rumours have suggested that Real Madrid are now interested in handing him a contract extension.
But as reported by AS, both parties haven’t found a solution in the economic aspect, with negotiations locked in a stalemate for months. It is believed that Real Madrid made Asensio a low-ball offer last year. The situation won’t likely be any different now, as the club’s new offer is expected to mean a wage cut for the player.
Real Madrid player’s contract extension is in doubt
While Asensio’s role in Ancelotti’s team has certainly grown over the course of the season, it is pretty clear that he is not a regular starter.
His best role is as an impact substitute off the bench, and thus, while Asensio staying would be a boost for Real Madrid, it is not an absolute necessity by any means.
Still, he is proven in La Liga and has been at the club a long time. Thus, Asensio staying on might be the best for Real Madrid, but only if it is on their own terms.
