Gary Neville has told Sky Sports that he believes that Alisson has been the best goalkeeper in the world over the last 12 months, as he named the Liverpool star in his team of the year.
Alisson had a calamitous evening last time out, gifting Wolves a goal in their draw at Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup last week. But there is absolutely no question that the Brazilian has been an unbelievable signing for the Reds.
No team at the World Cup boosted the kind of depth between the sticks that Brazil had. So it said a huge amount that Tite picked the 30-year-old ahead of Ederson of Manchester City in Qatar.
Neville praises Alisson as the best goalkeeper in the world
And Neville has now picked Alisson in his team of the year. He suggested that the Liverpool man still sets the standard, in his mind, when it comes to goalkeeping.
“I think he’s been the best in the world. The World Cup might have just shed a little bit of doubt on that, if anybody had any doubt over that. But for me, he still remains the best goalkeeper that I see in world football at this moment in time,” he told Sky Sports.
There is one statistic in the Premier League this season that is absolutely frightening when it comes to Alisson. Only 11 goalkeepers out of the 28 used this season have performed better in comparison to their expected goals conceded.
Nick Pope is in third place, having conceded 11 goals despite an expected goals against of 14.3. It is Kepa Arrizabalaga just ahead of him.
But way out in front is Alisson. He has conceded nine fewer goals than his expected goals against, according to FBRef. That is a staggering performance.
There have been some outstanding goalkeeping displays in recent months. But it cannot be ignored that both Neville and Jamie Carragher felt that Alisson was the best in the world over the last year.
