A MUM-of-three who believes in “unschooling” has revealed her children decide when they eat and go to bed, and she ʀᴇFᴜsᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ᴅɪsᴄɪᴘʟɪɴᴇ them. Vickie Hairsine pulled daughter Jessica out of school after six months and now home schools her, concentrating on activities outside of the curriculum.
The 25-year-old, , lives in Hull with husband Mike, and her three children – Jessica, seven, Theo, four, and Delilah, 11 months. But she insists her off-grid parenting ᴍᴇᴛʜᴏᴅs ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ʜᴇʀ ᴄʜɪʟᴅʀᴇɴ ʙᴀᴅʟʏ ʙᴇʜᴀᴠᴇᴅ.
She : “People’s immediate thoughts are they just eat sweets all the time but the programme shows that that is not what it’s like. Channel 4 are trying to ᴄʜᴀʟʟᴇɴɢᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘᴜʙʟɪᴄ ᴘᴇʀᴄᴇᴘᴛɪᴏɴ of what people feel. People think my kids must go to bed at 3am but that is not what happens. They have more freedom than most children but they are still well behaved and polite.”
Vickie removed Jessica from mainstream school as she felt she wasn’t adapting to school life. She chose to adopt the system of “unschooling” – an ᴇᴅᴜᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ method and philosophy that allows the child to chose the ᴇᴅᴜᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ activities for themselves. Although Jessica has lessons in English, maths and science, with the help of apps and books, she also gets together with other home-schooled kids for baking, horse riding and trampolining.
Exᴘʟᴀɪɴɪɴɢ ʜᴇʀ ᴘᴀʀᴇɴᴛɪɴɢ ᴍᴇᴛʜᴏᴅ, ʜᴇʀ ᴄʜɪʟᴅʀᴇɴ ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ sᴘᴇᴄɪFɪᴄ bed times so they go to bed whenever they are tired and they don’t eat at certain times. It’s all about children being able to make their own decisions and parents not overpowering or influencing their decisions. she has ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ Fᴇʟᴛ the need to ᴅɪsᴄɪᴘʟɪɴᴇ them. She’s never smacked them.
The mum-of-three wants to encourage other parents to consider home-schooling.
“Do your ʀᴇsᴇᴀʀᴄʜ, join the Facebook groups and come and meet us, Once you get speaking to people you will realise it’s not as scary as you think – it’s actually ᴘʀᴇᴛᴛʏ ʙʀɪʟʟɪᴀɴᴛ. The freedom and the happiness you get from it is amazing and I would really recommend it.”she said
