All it took was 15 minutes for a set of twins to be born on different days in different years. It’s an extraordinarily ʀᴀʀᴇ occurrence. Mom Fatima Madrigal said of her fraternal twins Alfredo and Aylin: “It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays.”
The couple Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo welcomed their son, Alfredo, on New Year’s Eve at 11:45pm. His sister, Aylin was born right when the clock hit midnight on New Year’s Day. Aylin weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces. and was the first baby born at Natividad Medical Center and in Monterey County in 2022. Her big brother, Alfredo, weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce. While twins having different birthdays can happen from time to time, being born in completely different years is ᴇxᴛʀᴇᴍᴇʟʏ ʀᴀʀᴇ. Madrigal explained her feelings behind her newborn kids’ unique birthdays. She said: “It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays. I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”
Each year, approximately 120,000 twins are born in the United States, accounting for more than 3% of all births, but twins with different birthdays are ᴇxᴛʀᴇᴍᴇʟʏ ʀᴀʀᴇ. It was also a thrill for the ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀ who delivered the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day twins. Dr Ana Abril Arias, a family ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀ at Natividad Medical Group and faculty at Natividad, said:” This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career. It was a real pleasure to assist these little ones in safely arriving in 2021 and 2022. What a fantastic way to ring in the New Year!”
At the family home in Greenfield, Monterey County, twins Alfredo and Aylin will soon join three older siblings, two girls and a boy. Madrigal, a mother of three, said her family was excited to meet the twins and that her oldest son was overjoyed that his first brother would be joining his parents at home.
