A college graduate’s day starts to become even more memorable. Jada Sayles is prepared to receive her diploma from Dillard College, a venerable B-college in New Orleans, on Saturday after four years of assiduous study. Later, she gave birth.
Just a few hours prior to the planned ceremony, Sayles was admitted to the hospital around 4:30 a.m. She finished the day off with the birth of her son, another crucial occasion.
She posted a message on Twitter with several gorgeous pictures of her smiling newborn: “I had planned to cross the stage to receive my diploma, but instead I gave birth to my child. On MY special day, my cute face made a decision to move.”
The school made the decision to arrange Sayles’ ceremony because she was unable to attend her own. Walter M. Kimbrough, president of Dillard University, tweeted: “Jada gave birth Friday night. She texted me at 4:30 am on Saturday to let me know she was being admitted and the baby was born the day before her graduation. So that I could end my employment in the most memorable way, we drove to the hospital.
Sayles wore a cap and gown to graduate from the hospital and obtain her degree. Another special guest was present: the newborn son she cradled in her arms, who was present in addition to her family members who were cheering for her in the background.
Kimbrough acknowledged the new mother’s “drive and commitment to greatness” before declaring that she had earned her degree. “This is certainly a wonderful moment,” he remarked next to a video of the hospital ceremony. Never will I forget it.
According to NBC station WDSU, Sayles obtained her Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree on that day. Despite the fact that he “would have done this for anyone that asked,” Kimbrough continued, he was the one who first suggested the visit. He recalls aSᴋɪɴg the new mom, “What time can we come?” This, in my opinion, is what HBCUs are all about.
