Fans of the DC Cinematic Universe’s (DCU) upcoming film Shazam! Fury of the Gods have taken to vocalizing their displeasure at the project’s new trailer and its many spoilers.
Ahead of the release of Zachary Levi’s second DCU movie, new footage has been released showcasing plenty of glimpses into what the adventure holds for audiences.
However, some feel it might have been too much.
Within the span of the single trailer, it seems that the entire arc of the storyline is presented in a nice concise manner. In fact, many are convinced that most of the final act beats are also given away.
Needless to say, it’s caused quite a stir.
Fans Are Displeased With Shazam
Warner Bros. and DC Studios released a brand new trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and many fans are unhappy with how it seems to spoil most of the movie.
JATH0R on Reddit claimed that “[they] feel like [they] saw the whole movie:”
“Dang, I feel like I saw the whole movie is that just me? I feel that they put too much in here.”
Fellow user zombiereign vocalized his wonder if new co-lead James Gunn “will have any control” over such things in the future:
“Whole movie in a trailer. I wonder if [James] Gunn will have any control over this in the future.”
TheRegular-Throwaway also felt confident that what they witnessed was “the whole movie:”
“That was the whole movie lol.”
Twitter user @RobertRichman0 brought Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania into the conversation, accusing it of doing something very similar:
“‘Shazam 2’ and ‘Ant-Man 3’ in a competition to see which film can spoil more of the plot in each trailer.”
@_aqmalik seemed in complete disbelief that Warner Bros. would show so much off:
“Tell me they didn’t show the entire final fight in the ‘Shazam’ trailer…”
In another Tweet, @cocognz even added a “bruh” to the equation, expressing his sheer disbelief:
That ‘Shazam’ trailer showed everything bruh.”
@FanCultureTalks was pretty confident that they should have “just released the movie:”
“They might aswell have just released the movie now if they was just gonna show everything in this new ‘Shazam’ trailer.”
Why Spoil the Whole Movie?
While many claim that the trailer spoiled all of Shazam! 2, it’s obviously impossible for fans to know if it did for sure until the film has been released.
For all the world knows, there could be an entirely separate third act that isn’t seen in any released footage. But say that’s not the case—why reveal so much?
Well, there are a few reasons. For one, with James Gunn’s DCU relaunch just around the corner, interest in the old DCEU is at an all-time low. Warner Bros. (WB) may feel the need to overcompensate to make up for it.
Secondly, even outside of an impending restart, the last DCU film, Black Adam, didn’t perform well. Given the character’s visual similarities to Shazam, the top brass at WB might feel a similar fate could befall Billy Batson if they don’t show audiences everything they have and more.
At the very least, the trailer seems to promise just as good of a time as the hero’s first outing. Hopefully, the world will also soon know the fate of Zachary Levi’s supe, something that will almost certainly affect interest in the coming film.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods releases on March 17.
