It is safe to say at this point that Kyrie Irving will continue to dominate the headlines for the next couple of days. The bombshell news dropped on Friday that the star guard had requested a trade and we have had rumors flying around ever since, on where he might end up.
The Brooklyn Nets are also determined to trade him before the deadline, as they look to get some solid pieces in return for someone who has no interest in playing for them beyond this season. It turns out, that Kyrie might not have any interest in playing for the Nets this season either if they are unable to trade him.
NBA insider Chris Haynes had said recently that he believes Kyrie will cooperate and finish out his contract if the Nets aren’t able to trade him before the deadline. Stephen A. Smith though, during an appearance on NBA Countdown, stated that he has heard that Kyrie is prepared to sit out.
(starts at 1:29 mark):
“Kyrie Irving is prepared to sit out the rest of the season if need be, that’s what I’m told. I don’t know whether I believe that, but that’s what people are saying.”
Smith himself isn’t sure whether he believes it, but you definitely wouldn’t put it past Kyrie doing this. He lives by his own rules and won’t budge no matter how much pressure the Nets might put on him. It might not get to that though, as offers do seem to be coming in for Kyrie.
The Nets Have Received A Strong Offer For Kyrie Irving From The Clippers
While everyone assumed that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers would be the ones looking to land Kyrie, it turns out that it is the Los Angeles Clippers who have made the first move. The Athletic’s Law Murray reported that they made a strong offer to the Nets and that head coach Tyronn Lue is open to a reunion with Irving.
The Nets will be hoping that this report leads to some panic among the other suitors and causes a bidding war of sorts. They have a talented roster and if they can manage to get a good haul in return for Irving, then they would be in with a chance at making some noise in the postseason.
