Many people think that only humans can be playful and funny, but new research indicates that elephants also possess these qualities.
These characteristics are crucial for the growth of the physical and social abilities needed for survival. Male and female African elephants both enjoy themselves in their 40s and 50s (the species typically lives up to around 70 years), proving that having pleasure is not limited to youth.
Elephants are quite creative and will sometimes utilize bones, stones, plants, or sticks when playing. These pachyderms are famous for their distinctive “floppy runs,” in which they gallop and trumpet and snort while their gigantic ears swing from side to side.
Elephants live in a predominantly matriarchal society where mothers instill in their young many of the social sᴋɪʟʟs necessary for survival. Calves depend on their elders for more than just food, shelter, and education; they also require them to learn the fundamentals of how to act like elephants.
Young females stay with their herd for the majority, if not all, of their lives, whereas males become independent by the age of five and may even completely leave the herd when they reach adulthood.
