After trading for Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns are the focus of the NBA this year.
Having KD on board has made them instant contenders for the NBA championship again, with some free agents from the buyout market also expected to join. The Suns will be a problem when all their stars take the court together, and the rest of the league realizes this.
The Phoenix Suns have 3 players that are all perennial All-Stars now, while Deandre Ayton is potential of that caliber as well. On offense, it will be impossible to cover Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and Devin Booker. Furthermore, all these players are excellent at the midrange game, giving them a lot of space on the offensive end to get high-percentage shots.
The main issue will be for the Western Conference teams, who will have to figure out how to stop the Suns in a 7-game series, they have what it takes to win it all. The Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Los Angeles Clippers all have to worry about the schemes they will play against the Suns. And the task is a daunting one, with Tyronn Lue’s words recently making that quite clear.
Tyronn Lue Says The Suns Are Similar To The Warriors Superteam
The Golden State Warriors dominated the league for two seasons, cantering to the NBA championship without a doubt. Kevin Durant was on that superteam, joining the winningest core in league history including Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. And Clippers coach Tyronn Lue has described the current Suns’ team as something close to that (via Los Angeles Times).
“It’s a tough trio and it reminds you of the Klay [Thompson], Steph [Curry] and KD, even though [Chris Paul] is a little older now,” said Lue, via Andrew Greif of the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a tough cover, it’s a tough matchup, just interested to see how they play, who they share the basketball. But on paper, it looks really good.”
This comparison is a little inaccurate considering that the Warriors were all in their primes while Chris Paul and Kevin Durant are fairly older and prone to injury. But their offensive arsenal is the most potent in the league for sure. No one would bet against the Suns to figure the West out and go on to win it all.
