Mesut Ozil moved to Turkey in January 2021 but it now seems like forever since he left Arsenal.
After eight colourful years at the Emirates, Ozil made the decision to join Fenerbahce knowing his time with the Gunners was up. His contract was terminated by mutual consent with the player reportedly forgoing part of the £7m owed to him.
The German said he was “very excited” to join the club and would “wear the shirt with pride”. He admitted to being a Fenerbahce fan as a kid, setting the tune for a supposed “match made in heaven”.
However, things didn’t go as expected. His first season was hampered by injuries. He missed eight games and waited till the final day of the season to contribute his first assist.
Ozil’s fortunes improved the following year. He racked up nine goals and two assists in 26 games across all competitions but fell off with the club’s hierarchy. Yet again, his contact was terminated.
He then moved to cross-town rivals Basaksehir last summer. There, the 32-year-old has struggled to stay fit too. He has made just four appearances so far, prompting reports that he was considering retirement at the season’s end.
But Ozil has since put all that to bed. The German, who is active on social media, occasionally shows support for Arsenal and some of his former teammates. He recently volunteered to support victims of the Turkey earthquake.
