Selena Gomez’s career can be described in one word — prolific. From singing her youthful heart out on “Barney and Friends” to starring in her latest project, “Only Murders in the Building,” alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, she’s consistently been in the spotlight. Outside of her career in acting, singing, and launching a beauty line, Gomez is guaranteed to appear in headlines that are concerned with her love life. Although she’s proudly single now, her most talked about relationship was with none other than Justin Bieber, with whom she spent eight years on and off. But Bieber was far from her only high-profile romance; Gomez has also been tied to several other knockout gentlemen throughout the years.
Dating one of the most recognized starlets in the world comes with its fair share of publicity, so it’s no surprise that Gomez’s exes have taken it upon themselves to spill about their relationship to the public. From low-key flings in her younger years to relationships well-documented by the paparazzi, here’s everything that Selena Gomez’s exes had to say about her — the good and the bad.
Nick Jonas admitted to not wanting to be caught with Selena Gomez

Gomez referred to her relationship with Jonas as “puppy love” in a 2015 interview with Capital FM, but her old flame apparently wasn’t too fond of the public knowing they were seeing each other.
When he appeared on an episode of “The Radio 1 Breakfast Show Heart Rate Monitor,” he got a surprise video from Gomez asking him if he remembered their Central Park date from way back in the day. Jonas immediately recalled their 2008 relationship where the paparazzi was on their back, which was a no-go for the Jonas Brother. “She [Gomez] was unhappy that her Central Park experience was ruined by the fact that I walked about 20 feet away from her. Even though they were taking pictures of us and obviously we were there together, I was like, ‘It’d be better if we stand about 25 feet apart.'” At least when Jonas was giving her the cold shoulder, she could walk alongside Taylor Swift, as Swift was also ditched by her then-boyfriend, Joe Jonas.
Justin Bieber both praised and belittled his former flame
Noel Vasquez/Getty ImagesWhen Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were first linked, the Disney star insisted her relationship with him was not romantic. “Oh brother, he’s little,” she told Ellen DeGeneres when asked how she has time to date Bieber in the midst of her busy schedule. “No, no, he’s like my little brother. That’s weird to me.” However, her feelings apparently quickly changed, because the infatuation was real when the two first went public in 2011. In fact, Bieber even suggested Gomez would be the mother of his future kids. “I really would love to be a young dad,” he told New! Magazine (via HuffPost). “Selena loves kids, she is really great with them.”
However, when Bieber wasn’t planning a future with Gomez, the downs of their relationship were chaotic, to say the least. Even when they were dating other people during their multiple breakups, they still couldn’t stop talking about each other. In a 2015 interview with Complex, Bieber said that he’ll always compare his new relationships to Gomez — but not for the best reasons.”I’m kind of seeing this girl, right? I’m shy about doing or saying certain things, and then I say it and it’s not even a problem. And I’ll remember when I couldn’t. … You’re just scarred and you don’t do something because in your last relationship they’d freak out, but [the new person is] just like, ‘What are you talking about?'” he explained.
Zedd said that dating Selena Gomez changed his life
Kevin Mazur/Getty ImagesIn 2015, when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had momentarily gone their separate ways, Gomez found comfort in Zedd, a DJ and music producer. At first, it appeared as if they were simply making music together, but after Zedd posted a picture of Gomez in bed with the caption “Oh hi derrling [sic],” (via Capital FM) the world quickly caught on to the fact that there was — more than likely— more going on between the two behind the scenes.
Little did Zedd realize, though, that dating one of the world’s most notorious celebrities doesn’t exactly allow for a lot of privacy. “She is one of the most talked about people in the world, but I had no idea how much that would change my life,” he told Billboard. He even recalled reporters calling his parents and people hacking into his friends’ phones to get more info on the couple. “I was pissed,” he said. The pair never spoke on their relationship while it was playing out in interviews, but Gomez confirmed they were an item on “The Edge Afternoons” post-breakup. “I adore Anton [Zedd] a lot and I definitely had a thing with him, which was nice,” she revealed.
Samuel Krost defended Selena Gomez as being real
InstagramSelena Gomez’s dating track record includes some high profile names, but her relationship after Zedd was with someone more low key — specifically, a New York University student. The only time that her alleged ex-boyfriend, Samuel Krost, graced TV screens was in “FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened,” where he explained how he got roped into booking talent for the infamous FYRE Festival. Hard to imagine how him and Gomez would’ve crossed paths, but Gigi Hadid, who is good friends with Krost, introduced the two.
Krost and Gomez ended up dating from late 2015 to early 2016. Fans got glimpses into their relationship through Instagram posts from the pair and their circle of friends, including his posts of their crew in Costa Rica. Krost still clearly had Gomez on his mind in August 2016 when he commemorated their relationship on Instagram. “Selena is a real girl with a real heart and real feelings,” he wrote in a now-deleted post (via Elle). “All you superficial who are just unhappy with your love lives, understand that love is real. Although we have ventured on separate paths, at least I know that love exists. I love you, Sel.” He was even bold enough to tag Gomez in the comments. Although the two have been spotted together since their breakup, Gomez confirmed she was not dating him.
Charlie Puth said Selena Gomez was torn between men
Kevin Mazur/Getty ImagesCharlie Puth and Selena Gomez dominated the airwaves in the summer 2016 with their duet “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” which rose to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Behind the scenes, there was a romance building between them, but Puth said it didn’t last long. The former lovebirds were introduced by Taylor Swift at a VMAs after party, which led them to connecting during a 2 a.m. recording session at Puth’s house in the Hollywood Hills.
In an interview with Billboard, the “Light Switch” singer opened up about his time with Gomez before they fizzled out. “Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful,” he said of their relationship. “And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in — what I was getting myself into,” he explained. If fans had to guess who she else she was thinking of, it’s a solid assumption that Bieber fever got in the way.
The Weeknd’s album spoke for itself
Nicholas Hunt/Getty ImagesWhen Selena Gomez started dating The Weeknd, people thought she might finally have moved on from Justin Bieber. Though they lasted only 10 months, their public appearances were flush with affection. While The Weeknd never really spoke about Gomez while dating her, he seemingly had a lot to say about her post breakup. Five months after they split, he dropped his project, “My Dear Melancholy,” which he intimated was about his relationship with Gomez (and Bella Hadid). It’s hard not to see the connection to Gomez in his lyrics, with lines like “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life/Guess I was just another pit stop/’Til you made up your mind/You just wasted my time,” which people think is a reference to him almost donating his kidney to Gomez. Gomez began hanging out with Bieber again the same month her breakup with The Weeknd was announced, so it’s no wonder he got emotional at Coachella while performing the song.
Fans didn’t have to solely decode lyrics to know his feelings about Gomez. He opened up to Esquire about the EP over two years after its release. “The reason why it was so short [the album] is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this … whatever,” he began. “It was just like this cathartic piece of art.” Gomez called The Weeknd her best friend after the split, but the two haven’t been seen hanging out much since.
Justin Bieber finally admitted his wrongdoing in his relationship with Selena Gomez
DFree/ShutterstockSelena Gomez’s last go-around with Justin Bieber in 2018 was her final publicly known relationship. The two reportedly ended in March 2018, with Bieber proposing to Hailey Baldwin in July 2018. With a turn of events that quick, the public started to turn against the pop star, and he took to Instagram to do some reflecting in September 2019. “I started doing pretty heavy drugs at 19 and abused all of my relationships. I became resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry,” he admitted in a lengthy post addressing how being a child star negatively affected him. “It’s taken me years to bounce back from all these terrible decisions, fix broken relationships, and change relationship habits.”
Apparently that introspection wasn’t enough for Gomez, who said “I felt I didn’t get a respectful closure,” during a January 2020 interview with NPR. Bieber was ready to open up even more a month after Gomez’s interview, and he touched upon what caused their demise. “In my previous relationship, I went off and just went crazy and went wild, just was being reckless,” he said to Zane Lowe and Apple Music. “[With Hailey Baldwin] I took the time to really build myself and focus on me, and try to make the right decisions and all that sort of stuff. And yeah, I got better.” For now, it’s safe to say that might be the last we hear Jelena speak of each other.
