Man Utd have been mentioned alongside hijacking a Liverpool midfield transfer in a shock move that’d also be to the detriment of Chelsea, per a report.
Liverpool and Man Utd’s fortunes have experienced a dramatic reversal this season. The Red Devils ended their six-year trophy drought on Sunday upon lifting the EFL Cup at Wembley. The Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League are also in Erik ten Hag’s sights.
The Reds, meanwhile, face an uphill struggle simply to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Barring a remarkable turnaround at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid on March 15, the Community Shield will be their only piece of silverware this season.
A midfield overhaul is on the agenda at Anfield over the summer. With the Mirror reporting no fewer than five current midfielders could go, multiple additions will be required.
Among those on Liverpool’s radar is Chelsea star, Mason Mount.
The 24-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge is due to expire at the end of next season. As such, and with no progress made over an extension, this coming summer represents the ideal time to cash in.
The Mirror claimed earlier on Tuesday that Mount could be just one of three homegrown Blues to make way at season’s end. The others are Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The newspaper reaffirmed Liverpool are ‘keen’ on signing Mount and described the Reds as being on pole position.
Elsewhere, Man Utd links with Mount had been fleeting thus far, though through the Telegraph’s latest update, that’s no longer the case.
The Telegraph’s Matt Law reported that aside from Liverpool, Man Utd are indeed ‘showing an interest’ in signing Mason Mount. Man City too are in the mix, though their focus is likely to centre on a different Chelsea midfielder.
Mount can operate anywhere across a frontline other than centre-forward. He is also capable of playing either side of a three-man midfield.
His versatility could appeal to Ten Hag who has already shown a willingness to chop and change. Indeed, the Dutchman has recently enjoyed great success shifting Marcus Rashford from the left wing to No 9 in a move that dropped Wout Weghorst in at No 10 and put Bruno Fernandes out on the wing.
Little else regarding Mount’s future is hinted at in the report, though a potential suitor for Loftus-Cheek is named.
Like Mount, Loftus-Cheek’s contract will expire in mid-2024. However, unlike Mount, the Blues have an option for an extra 12 months.
Whether it’ll be activated for a player who has never been a regular starter at Stamford Bridge remains to be seen. If Chelsea decide to cash in, they may find a willing buyer in the form of AC Milan, per the report.
