There are 5 different rhino species in the world. These include the black and wʜɪᴛe rhinos, two species of rhinoceros that are native to Africa. Greater one-horned, Sumatran, and Javan rhinos are three of the three extant Asian rhino species.
The Sumatran, Javan, and Black rhinos are classified as “critically ᴇɴᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀed” by the IUCN because there are reportedly just 76 Javan rhinos and between 34 and 47 Sumatran rhinos surviving in the wild.
Sumatran rhinos are the smallest rhinoceros, yet they may still weigh up to 600 kg, or 95 stone. The wʜɪᴛe rhino, which may weigh up to 3,500 kg, is the largest species of rhino. Male rhinos are referred to as “bulls,” while females are referred to as “cows.” “Calves” are their young. Compared to more lonely, territorial males, females are typically more sociable.
Rhinos communicate by making a variety of amusing noises. They snarl and make “trumpet cries” when arguing. Black rhinos snort when enraged, produce sneeze-like alarm sounds, scream when they’re ᴛᴇʀʀɪғɪᴇᴅ, and utter the sound “mmwonk” when they’re at ease. Poo and urine are other forms of communication used by rhinos. They can smell each other’s poop and pee and can tell who is nearby when rhinos poop in the same place, which is called a latrine.
