Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving face off this Sunday for the first time since their blockbuster trades to the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks, respectively.
Speaking on this duel, Durant was brutally honest, saying that this isn’t a special game for him, but he understands if people make it something bigger than it actually is.
“Just another game. I understand the entertainment aspect and a lot of people on the outside got the game circled on their calendar, but for both teams, just regularly scheduled programming. Getting back to work and seeing how you can get better as a unit,” Durant said, per Jamal Collier of ESPN.
These two were supposed to lead the Brooklyn Nets to win at least one NBA championship, but their tenure in Brooklyn was full of controversy, which ultimately led to their departure from the team.
Kyrie requested and was sent to Dallas instead of Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Luka Doncic. As for Durant, he created another superteam in Phoenix, joining forces with Devin Booker and Chris Paul.
Just like KD, Kyrie talked about this duel, saying that he was ready for the competition.
Kevin Durant Reveals His True Feelings On Kyrie Irving Leaving Brooklyn Nets
Durant has talked about Kyrie’s departure from Brooklyn, revealing he felt disappointed that they couldn’t get the job done, but admitting he can’t blame Kyrie for anything that happened.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t finish the season. But I also know we’re all separate entities. We all move and do the things that we want to do with our careers. I can’t fault somebody for doing that, even though it was at the expense of the team. That’s what he needed, that’s what he wanted to do. I don’t have a problem with that.”
These two players are ready to lead their new squads to the championship now. It’ll be hard with the stiff competition in the Western Conference, but the Suns and Mavericks know they have big chances to win it all this season. Right now, the Suns rank 4th in the West, while the Mavericks sit at 6th, trying to climb positions on the leaderboard.
