New jaw-dropping fan art imagines Samara Weaving as the new DCU’s Harley Quinn, taking over the reins from her celebrity lookalike Margot Robbie.
Compelling DC Universe fan art imagines Samara Weaving as the Harley Quinn for the DCU. New DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently in the process of figuring out which actors will continue from the old DCEU to their new DCU slate. New fan art makes the case for Weaving taking over the Harley Quinn role from DCEU star Margot Robbie.
Digital artist horrific.heroics shared on Instagram a stunning look at Weaving’s possible Harley Quinn.
Ever since Henry Cavill’s exit from the Superman role was revealed by Gunn, speculation has been running rampant on which actors are bound for a DCU return. Gunn’s The Suicide Squad starring Robbie’s Harley Quinn makes that particular casting feel safer than others, but nothing is currently set in stone.
Who’s Playing Harley Quinn In James Gunn’s DC Universe?
If Robbie were not to return for the role of Harley Quinn in the new DCU, then her celebrity lookalike Weaving would be a great fit for the role. Weaving’s ability to play Harley goes beyond any surface-level comparison to Robbie, with the actress showing in her past roles that she could do justice to the eclectic anti-hero. Weaving’s acting credits include quite a few gore-filled stories, with the actress portraying complex characters as complex as Harley Quinn. Weaving could bring a new flavor to the role, going away from Robbie’s comic-book-y Harley Quinn for a more subtle and human version of the character.
Gunn’s new take on the DCU, however, appears to be headed more into comic book territory than DC’s movies and series have ever done in the past. Based on that, it is difficult to believe any actress other than Robbie will be playing Harley Quinn in the main DCU canon. The recent announcement of the DCU Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters,” further heightened the chances that Robbie will return as Harley. During the DCU slate reveal, Gunn mentioned that team Peacemaker — from the show he developed — will join the returning Viola Davis for the Waller series. Some old DC movies are canon to the DCU, it appears.
Based on that, and the fact that other DCEU stars set to appear in Waller were in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad — same as Robbie — the DCU’s Harley Quinn should not be someone new. In the end, there really is no need to recast Robbie for the DCU, as the actress is one of the most popular castings DC has ever had and is game to continue playing the character for a long time. Other Harley Quinns could come in the form of different versions of the character in the announced DC Elseworlds label — where projects will take place outside the DCU continuity. That way, a full-on DCU reset is not necessary, and Robbie can continue as Harley for years to come.
