Scarlett Johansson has revealed how her new action film Black Widow is reflective of women’s empowerment.
The actress, 36, told Channel Ten’s The Project how the film highlights the strength of women.
‘The last five years has been significant in the movement for women’s empowerment. It’s huge. And this film is reflective of that. It would be amiss if it wasn’t,’ she said.

Scarlett continued: ‘It’s so much more interesting if we make a movie about women lifting up other women out of trauma so that they can thrive.’
It comes after Scarlett said she is grateful her Marvel alter ego Natasha Romanoff is no longer ‘hyper-sexualized’.
She has played the role of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade after making her debut as the character in 2010 film Iron Man 2, in which she had to model lingerie.

Scarlett is pleased that the way the character is treated and portrayed on screen has evolved since that first cinematic appearance.
‘Obviously, 10 years have passed and things have happened and I have a different, more evolved understanding of myself,’ she told Collider.
‘As a woman, I’m in a different place in my life, you know?’ she added.

‘All of that is related to that move away from the kind of hyper-sexualization of this character and, I mean, you look back at Iron Man 2 and while it was really fun and had a lot of great moments in it, the character is so sexualized,’ Scarlett said.
Black Widow is set prior to Scarlett’s character Natasha being killed off in Avengers: Endgame.
In the new film, Natasha is forced to confront missions alone before forging a strong friendship with Yelena Belova [played by Florence Pugh] – who is also trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow.
