Mother shares heartbreaking photo of preterm infant’s ‘last embrace’ for her dying twin sister as she cradles them both for the first time.
Charlotte Campbell embraces her sister Esme in this beautiful photograph. That was the first time their mother Amy was able to embrace them both together after they were born at 26 weeks and five days gestation.
Charlotte Campbell may be seen placing her arm over her ailing sister Esme Campbell in the touching photograph of Amy Campbell cradling both of her daughters.
Amy, a 30-year-old former special education teacher, and Conor Campbell, a 32-year-old commercial manager, had just gotten the heartbreaking news that their daughter, Esme, had an excessive quantity of fluid on her brain.
Esme and her sister Charlotte fought for their lives for seven weeks after being born extremely early at 26 weeks and five days on July 10, 2016, weighing barely 2.2 and 2 pounds, respectively.
Amy and Conor took the difficult choice to turn off their daughter’s life support after tests revealed that her brain ventricles were packed with so much fluid that she would never have a normal life.
Amy and Conor, first-time parents from Leeds, Yorkshire, wanted their children to’meet’ before Esme passed away, so they sought the nurses for assistance holding both girls at the same time.
“The nurses placed them on my chest and Charlotte wrapped her arm over Esme, and I thought to myself, ‘They adore each other,'” Amy, 30 years old, remembered.
She noted that holding her cherished kids was the “greatest moment” of her life, stating, “Everything felt so right.”
Amy feels that the girls have had a supernatural bond from birth, and Esme will always be there for Charlotte in their unique twin manner.
The touching photograph of the twins was shot on August 27, 2016, unfortunately Esme passed away in the early hours of August 30, 2016.
With Esme’s passing, Conor and Amy have established a non-profit organization in her honor named Campbellinas – the twins’ moniker.
As a way of saying “thank you” for the treatment they got at the Leeds hospital, the couple has contributed more than £10,000 to date.
Amy has also created a blog titled This Is My Brave Face to assist other bereaved families.
