Still only 22, Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence is being touted as the hot favourite for the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a sexy, troubled widow in Silver Linings Playbook .
But apart from that, the 5ft 9in actress and ex-squeeze of Nicholas Hoult has also become one of our fave fashion queens wowing us on red carpets.
She talks getting down and dirty with Bradley Cooper – on the dance floor – putting her foot in her mouth, and learning to love the red carpet.
Are you getting used to being a famous movie star? (Laughs.) No. I can still walk around most cities without being recognised and I can still sit by myself in cafes and just be normal.
So there’s no danger of you turning into a diva? Never. Maybe if I were a doctor saving people’s lives I might be a little arrogant or standoffish. I don’t think being an actor entitles me to feel self-important or pretend to be anything but a regular person who has a creative side and whose job happens to attract a lot of attention.
Do you enjoy the perks of stardom? I like the financial security because I know how hard it is for so many people who struggle to earn a living. I’m grateful I don’t have to worry about money and I can live very freely and do something I love and get paid very well to do it. I tell my friends to slap me if they ever think I’m getting full of myself.
You have a very sexy dance scene with Bradley Cooper – what kind of dancer is he? He’s very good. He moves very smoothly. I felt bad for him, because he’s such a good dancer and I’m so bad. We rehearsed two hours a day and he didn’t have to do much, but I was in need of the extra sessions so I could look less like a malfunctioning robot.

Did Bradley give you any advice? He was the one who told me I couldn’t shop in Whole Foods and I tested it and he was totally right. The paparazzi are at every Whole Foods. It’s fine, I have friends to get my groceries (laughs).

Is it true the director David O. Russell asked you to gain weight for the film? Yes, and I told him I had no problem with that and I would get on it right away. But I was also dancing two hours a day and he was like, ‘You’re not getting any fatter’ so I was like, ‘Then make me stop dancing’. When I finally slowed down the dancing it was like, ‘I’m looking pretty damn good, right?’ Then he said, ‘You are going to be in a tube top and a belly shirt in the dance scene’. I was like, ‘You’re awful’.
Do you work out? I do yoga and I do some circuit training, so I don’t have to diet. I know there’s this trend for actresses looking very thin but I don’t think that look suits me and I feel just fine the way I am and I don’t worry about my weight too much. I’ve never had guys complain too much about the way I look either.
You give the impression of being very direct and down-to-earth… I don’t want to present a manufactured version of myself and sometimes I make my publicist cringe when I start talking about something and I’m liable to say something a little outrageous or strange. I don’t have that much control over my mouth and I never prepare what I’m going to say before an interview.
Do you feel you’ve changed since your career has taken off? I don’t think I’ve changed very much at all. I’ve had the same condo in LA for the last two years and it’s very rare that I go out. I’m a homebody and I don’t get any kick from going to a club and having people recognise me or getting special treatment.
How do you cope with the whole red carpet thing ? I’ve been able to find a way to get excited. I used to hate clothes and shopping and fittings, but I’m starting to like it now.
What do you make of being called ‘The Most Desirable Woman In The World’? I find that confusing… because I’ve seen many women who are more desirable than me.
What were you like at school? I’ve had a severe case of anxiety since I was young about getting in trouble. I hate getting in trouble and I hate breaking rules. I try to live my life doing what I think is the best thing to do in the situation. So then something goes wrong and I end up apologising.
Is it possible not to think about winning the Oscar ? It’s definitely possible. I try not to. For my career, I hope, knock on wood, that it happens. but I don’t have a personal interest in it. I’m not going to cry myself to sleep if it doesn’t happen, I’m still going to be happy. I’m still going to have my friends and I will be fine. It’s just, will I get promoted or not?
