Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to controversy and wryly admitted recently that she’s actually ‘made a career out of it.’
The 36-year-old superstar addressed her penchant for getting into hot water when it comes to her career choices during an interview with The Gentlewoman, published this week.
Over the years, the Black Widow star has been accused of whitewashing for taking on a role intended for a person of color and has defended the likes of Woody Allen, who has recently been plagued once more by accusations of child molestation from his former adopted daughter.
Mea culpa: Scarlett Johansson addressed her penchant for getting into hot water when it comes to her career choices during an interview with The Gentlewoman, published this week, admitting she’s ‘made a career out of it.’
‘I’ve made a career out of it,’ Scarlett quipped when asked about her controversial past.
‘I’m going to have opinions about things, because that’s just who I am,’ she told the magazine. ‘I mean, everyone has a hard time admitting when they’re wrong about stuff, and for all of that to come out publicly, it can be embarrassing.’
‘To have the experience of, Wow, I was really off mark there, or I wasn’t looking at the big picture, or I was inconsiderate,’ she continued, shrugging: ‘I’m also a person.’
The blonde bombshell admitted that it is ’embarrassing’ to find herself being put on blast in the public eye for a role she accepted or comments she made. However, at times, rather than listening and learning, the actress has doubled down and made matters worse.

For her role in 2017’s Ghost in the Shell. Scarlett was accused of whitewashing for accepting the gig as Motoko Kusanagi – a character that should have gone to a Japanese actor.
When she was cast as a transgender character in Rub and Tug, Scarlett was called out once more but she defended her choice in a flip statement that only worsened the controversy.
Scarlett dismissed the critiques about being a cis woman cast as a trans character saying the media ‘can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.’ All three of those cis actors listed famously played trans characters.
Many argued that it was a different time and that representation was more important than ever for the trans community. Ultimately, Scarlett back peddled with an apology and didn’t do the film.

She’s also been heavily criticized for her defense of scandal plagued director Woody Allen who is currently facing renewed and repeated accusations from his ex-adopted daughter Dylan that he molested her when she was a child.
‘I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime,’ Johansson said in 2019. ‘I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. I have been very direct with him, and he’s very direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.’
Allen directed Scarlett in several of her most famous roles. He was recently the topic of an explosive HBOMax docuseries, Allen v. Farrow, which looked back at the allegations of sexual assault from Dylan and Mia Farrow’s perspective.
‘I can be reactive. I can be impatient. That doesn’t mix that great with self-awareness,’ Scarlett told The Gentlewoman.
Meanwhile, the star is set to expand her role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her standalone superhero flick Black Widow which debuts this July.
