While Scarlett Johansson is eager to do battle against Disney, it appears that for Dwayne Johnson, aka. The Rock, this is one battle he thinks he can’t win.
Last Thursday on July 29, 2021; Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney for breach of contract over Black Widow. Specifically, the lawsuit was for releasing the film in both theaters and on Disney+ at the same time. This move cost Johansson a lot of money. Jungle Cruise had the same problem. So naturally, you would expect Dwayne Johnson to also join her in the battle against Disney, right?
Well, as it turns out, no. According to Deadline, Dwayne Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions company have “no intention of battling Disney for any anticipated loss of dollars on this day-and-date release” of Jungle Cruise. According to the article, Johnson had agreed to a simultaneous theaters and Disney+ release for his film. Thus, he has no quarrel with Disney and no reason to join Scarlett Johansson in her battle against them. It’s understandable for The Rock in this case, even if it’s a bit disappointing.
To be fair to Dwayne Johnson, without a reason to fight, it’d be going against his interests to join Scarlett Johansson in her battle against Disney. Unlike with Black Widow, Disney did not lie to Dwayne Johnson or deliberately breach a contract with him. The Rock agreed to the simultaneous release of Jungle Cruise on both theaters and Disney+. It makes no sense for Johnson to fight Disney unless it was purely out of morality. And well, money makes the world go round, even if it’s coming from Disney.
Dwayne Johnson and Seven Bucks Productions will not form an anti-Disney Legal Avengers front with Scarlett Johansson. The Rock currently has no beef with Disney. He agreed to that simultaneous theaters and Disney+ release of Jungle Cruise. The same can’t be said of Black Widow though, which is why Johansson will continue her legal battle, without The Rock joining in.
