Jennifer Lawrence has spoken about her new role in life, after becoming a mother to her son in February.
In a new interview with the October issue of Vogue Magazine, the actress speaks for the first time about motherhood and confirms the gender of her first child as well as his name, Cy.
Gushing that she has fallen in love with being a parent, the Silver Linings Playbook star admitted it was ‘scary’ to talk about becoming a mother after friends warned her that she may not ‘fall in love right away’, but she admitted that as soon as she gave birth it felt like it was ‘day one of my life’.
New role: Jennifer Lawrence has spoken about her new role in life, after becoming a mother to her son earlier this year in a candid new interview for the October 2022 issue of Vogue
Jennifer and her husband of three years Cooke Maroney welcomed their son six months ago but up until now had not confirmed the gender or his name.
The actress now explains that she and Cooke decided on the name Cy after the postwar American painter Cy Twombly, who is one of her gallerist husband’s favorite artists.
She admitted to Vogue that she has so far been reluctant to speak out on her baby, explaining ‘it’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody. If I say, It was amazing from the start, some people will think, It wasn’t amazing for me at first, and feel bad.’
‘Fortunately I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away. So I felt so prepared to be forgiving.’

‘I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?’
While she felt well-prepared in the lead-up to welcoming her first child, Jennifer went on to admit that any fears about not connecting with her son disappeared when they met.
‘The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, Now is day one of my life. I just stared. I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere.’ she gushed.
‘Newborns are just so amazing. They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors,’ Jennifer continued. ‘Now I love all babies. Now I hear a baby crying in a restaurant and I’m like, Awwww, preciousssss.…
The Oscar-winner added that she has fallen more in love with her husband after watching him become a father, explaining: ‘My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about. I include my husband in that.’
Son: Jennifer and her husband of three years Cooke Maroney, 38, welcomed her baby boy in the Spring, but until now has not confirmed the gender or spoken about becoming a parent
‘And then they’re both just, like, out there—walking around, crossing streets. He’s gonna drive one day. He’s gonna be a stupid teenager and be behind the wheel of a car. And I’m just gonna be like, Good night! You know? Like, who sleeps?’
‘I mean the euphoria of Cy is just—Jesus, it’s impossible,’ Lawrence said. ‘I always tell him, “I love you so much it’s impossible”‘.
Jennifer, who has been on a hiatus from acting, also spoke about her pregnancy for the first time during the candid cover story .
She explained how throughout the pregnancy she found herself considering the changing landscape of women’s rights and admitted that the recent US Supreme Court overruling of Roe Vs Wade resurfaced painful memories for her.
In love: ‘The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, Now is day one of my life. I just stared. I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere.’ she gushed
Jennifer explained that she had her first miscarriage in her early 20s and had ‘one hundred percent’ intending to get an abortion before ‘I had a miscarriage alone in Montreal.’
She had another loss a couple of years ago while shooting Don’t Look Up in late 2020/early 2021.
At this point in her life she was married and told Vogue she very much wanted to have a child but sadly she had another miscarriage, this time having a D&C, the surgical procedure by which tissue is removed from the uterus.
She said that she found it difficult to fathom young women with limited options forced into unwanted pregnancies, especially since experiencing motherhood herself this year.
‘I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant,’ Jennifer told Vogue. ‘Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy. I had a very fortunate pregnancy.’
‘But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?’

Jennifer was also keen to discuss with Vogue her concerns about raising a son in the US, speaking out on gun violence in schools.
‘I’m raising a little boy who is going to go to school one day. Guns are the number-one cause of death for children in the United States. And people are still voting for politicians who receive money from the NRA,’ she said.
‘It blows my mind. I mean if Sandy Hook didn’t change anything? We as a nation just went, Okay! We are allowing our children to lay down their lives for our right to a second amendment that was written over 200 years ago.’
Jennifer shared that she distanced herself from her family on account of their conflicting political views.
She stated emphatically, ‘You live in the United States of America. You have to be political. It’s too dire. Politics are killing people.’
Specifically, the Kentucky native mentioned her father, noting, ‘I just worked so hard in the last five years to forgive my dad and my family and try to understand: It’s different. I’ve tried to get over it and I really can’t. I can’t.’
